Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

This time of year is awful for hatching. I've been considering myself lucky to get 1 chick per shipment. Of course, before January, I was getting pretty good rates, including 100% hatch from a shipped serama batch.
Before January...hmmmm...I wonder why? It is too hot in other parts of the country right now?

I have been having more eggs develop recently but never pip. I am doing everything the same as before so I am not sure what the issue is.

I have also had 32 eggs shipped to me from NV...and only about three developed at all. Rest were clear, a few blood rings...they were sent in separate batches weeks apart from the same person. However, she is hatching them fine at home so it's has to be something with the shipping. She is going to hatch and send me chicks instead. I really hope they make it safe.

Its is disappointing though. I have been having horrible luck with CCL...the one good batch I managed to hatch was 5 males only 1 female made it. At this rate it would have been cheaper just to buy chicks!

I think it's PO handling. It's hot here, but I have been hatching very well. I think certain sorting places just are harder on eggs. Also could be x raying more.

It is AWFUL! I'm so done with winter and it is SNOWING again today!

We have had predator dogs before, but they can't roam free on our property since we have neighbors who have shot our dogs before. So, what we did was create a run right by the chicken pens between them and the field. Once the raccoons figured out that the dogs were on a leash and couldn't get to them, they just went around them.

Thanks everyone for the support, but we've tried everything and we still have issues. I'm just going to take this as a sign and only keep the birds I have, swaps owed, and not get anymore after that.

Don't they go through sorting at both destinations?

Twice as many places for rough handling. I am not sure the flow of mail once it gets received at the PO. But from watching tracking, I think it gets sorted 2-3 times. For example, to ship from my PO to CA...my box goes to Jacksonville, then to the Sacramento ca, then to the town PO then delivered. That is 4 different post offices (2 sorting facilities) that have their hands on the eggs, plus travel.
I have been lucky, and am pretty happy with the eggs coming and going through Jacksonville. I hatched 14/17 shipped salmon faverolles last week and have had a customer write with a 8/9 BCM hatch rate.
It seems to me it is just certain places that are like a death ray for eggs. I had a person ship me two separate times and I never saw any development... Probably got xrayed.

Maybe it has something to do with living in a metro area, it only goes through one sorting in St Paul and then on to me?

Ugh, when it rains it pours... Went out this morning to clean out the chick house. It rained last night and some of it got in the chick house. I'm not sure how, but it did. It drown 7 chicks who had for some reason piled up in That corner.
Oh, no!!!! man, hindsight is 20/20. you cant know how everything is going to go, though....you just cant.
Well, I have some bad news. I've had some major issues with my chickens lately. I've thought long and hard about this. As soon as the chickens I have now have lived full lives, I will not be getting anymore. On my last hatches from shipped eggs, I got one chick out of over three dozen eggs and this one was SUPPOSED to be a Rhodebar, but it is yellow with two black spots. I had a great hatch out of my own pilgrim goose eggs, so I know it's not that. It just has something to do with shipped eggs that don't do well for me. Then, a few nights ago, a raccoon literally ate a hole through our fencing and killed every single Rhodebar I bought from madamwlf and then last night something ate through the brooder at the other end of our property and killed some of my chicks from CPL. I'm just done. We've killed at least 40-50 raccoons and possums in the last two years and they still kill everything. Nature wins this one. Thanks to all of you for being so supportive! Once my spring claims come in and the hatches are done, I will not be getting anymore chickens. I'll fulfill the orders I have out, but then I'm done.
OH, no! so so sorry to hear. but I really do understand...I was almost there myself last night with the MG thing and now the Coccidia. but I guess I should count myself lucky that I haven't had to deal with what you have. Wow...that's a lot of predation. we only have lost 7 chicks so far with the coccidia and I have a lot of hope for the rest...they are making noise and drinking and eating. but coming out in the morning and finding all that carnage would just set me over the edge, too. I do think that our having dogs must be helping. and we have electric fencing. but I don't think we have near the volume of the problem you do.

big huge bear hugs.

What does X-raying do to the eggs? I have always wondered why it was bad because we get it done to ourselves!

Profti- how are the eggs I sent you? Should be going into lockdown? When I shipped to you, they still go through Jacksonville then St. Paul. So only three POs instead of four.

Tim, I wouldn't give up. I've been to the "I quit" stage a few times, but haven't quite thrown in the towel yet. My ducks have been HELL for me. I had an idiot at the prison house who found humor in swerving off the road to run my birds over.he killed my blue carrier royal palm hen, my drake and ran over a duck hen. After replacing my drake, I got a few eggs, then it was killed by the neighbor's dog. After a few months, I finally got another drake, but a week or so ago, one of my hens was killed by a bald eagle and the other lost her eye and looks like hell now and won't lay. I had also lost a hen to bullying. She basically starved to death. :/ I had hatched two drakes that we were going to use as breeders before we found this last drake, but one had problems and the other was mean as sin. So, out of 5 hens and 5 drakes, I have 1 hen and 1 drake that are breeding and 1 hen that's currently just wasting my feed. :/ Now, these sell really well for me and can sustain the entire flock with just one hen, but come on! I need to try to keep up with orders, replace my hens and put meat in my freezer with just one hen!
