Big giant bummer today. I had a hen sitting on two eggs (she went broody and I didn't want too many more chicks, so I stuck just two under her) She did a great job incubating them, but one of them this morning was having trouble getting out and I decided to intervene after I finished feeding. By the time I finished feeding, it was dead in the shell. I opened it up and did chest compressions (wacko, I know). It was a really really big chick, not a big wet chick, just a giant brahma mix, there was very little air sac and the shell (a green one) was super thick. If I could have just been a bit quicker feeding, or helped the chick in the egg first, I would have saved it. Makes me feel like such a heel.
Then her other chick hatched and she attacked it! I found it bleeding from its ears. I put it in with my bator chicks that hatched yesterday and it seems okay, but I'm thinking that it may develop some brain swelling or that it may have aspirated some blood. As soon as I took her chick away, she left the coop and didn't even look back. B****!.
