I did tell her about respiratory problems and that's when she stopped emailing. These weren't my chicks anyway, these were coming from GFF. And to be honest I won't sell someone chicks if I know they are having health issues in their current birds. I put too much love and care into my chickies to send them off like that.
Really, why send them to their possible deaths

Maybe she stopped emailing because she's doing research and taking care of things?
Having chickens die regularly is a different story. I was thinking she had a respiratory thing that she treated (meaning it allievating symptoms) and that was it.
Well, you asked for opinions, but I think you've got your mind and a plan made up already ;)

I always ask opinions on odd stuff like this. Apparently it isn't the first time she's had birds die.

Quote: TNBEAR I have a question since you always mention health only, but never mention genetic issues, faults and culling. Are you breeding to standard and culling for faults? Do you have a copy of the SOP to refer to? Or are you more focused on just healthy stock for breeding now, with sop concerns coming later?

So I have a dilemma and want to see what you guys say. I had someone contact me about some of my chicks and after much chatting back and forth, she wanted to order some SFH chicks with my order from GFF this week. I said no problem and ordered and paid for them myself. She is suppose to pay for them when she picks them up. This is the same person I was suppose to get a pair of blue D'anvers from. I found out from her that she has this respiratory issue that pops up every once in a while that she treats with antibiotics.

I declined to take the d'anvers due to this and now, I really don't want to give her the SFH chicks either. Am I wrong here????
I wouldnt sell her anything for any reason. If someone mentions to me they lost birds to X, or have birds wheexing or respritory I wont sell to them. If they mention how "something" just keeps killing their birds, again i wont sell to them. I too dont care about feelings when someone mentions predator attacks and treats birds like fast food drive through re-order. Everyone deals with a sick bird at some time or another, HOWEVER, if they say its re-occuring and they treat with antibiotics then they need to re-think how they are doing things.

I am a big one for culling. I cull a lot of birds every year and dont think twice about it. Bad genes are bad genes and dont need passed along. We also dont need/want any sick birds and the over use of antibiotics is not good for anyone. I also do a bunch of reading on various forums, and if I see the same person posting about this issue and that issue I never buy from them or swap with them. I dont claim from those who have a revolving door of birds either (and if I find out after the fact I refuse the swap).

GFF is not the only game in town on imports, yes they have the largest selection, but they dont care for thir facility and stock in such a way to be beneficial to the birds or the buyers.

I couldn’t get onto the computer yesterday because our phone lines are down for some reason! (DSL) Technicians are supposed to come out today to see what’s wrong. So I got on here and had 150 unread posts! But read them all. Celtic…your pictures are always so gorgeous. And I enjoyed the chick and duckling pictures, too. HollowOak…I love your morning greeting everyday…it makes me smile! Madam-want pictures of your new fodder system! I tried fodder but I kept getting mold growth. I read up more and heard that Hydrogen peroxide in the water can help with that. Haven’t had the time to try again, but look forward to hearing your experiences and I am going to try again, armed with this new knowledge.

Well, we had a very busy weekend. Let me just state for the record that Coccidiosis sucks. But we finished the new coop (YAY!!!!) and I built a new brooder with a wire mesh floor for the indoor chicks. And the remaining chicks in the ICU box are all eating and drinking and I think they may live. Bloody poop has stopped.

I think it was particularly bad because I caught it so late. I was erroneously thinking that I had somehow transported the MG inside to the chicks and that they were just going to be droopy for a few days and get over it. I should have known when none of them sneezed. Hindsight is 20/20.

I have never experienced Coccidiosis before…wow. That was rough. I honestly can say that it puts some perspective on the MG thing. I haven’t lost a single bird to MG (If they have it, my birds are totally asymptomatic) but the coccidia was lightning fast in taking out ½ my Dorkings chicks. Still don’t know why BM6 and CPL’s chicks fared so well. Not a single loss there. I had them in the same brooder. But I am feeling a lot better having them all up on wire. And I am using puppy piddle pads underneath so all I have to do is roll the pads up and throw them away. SO much easier than before!!!!!

I think I even solved the feed-falling-though-the-mesh problem…I made a very shallow tray for the feed with the 1/2” hardware cloth over top so they can scratch all they want and the feed will stay put. But their beaks are still small enough that they can get the food.

I was in the woodshop and outside solid the whole weekend until 10:30 at night. I ate lunch out in the goat coop watching the broody momma with her chicks. (That was cool…I needed some healthy chick time) I came to work today to get a break!!!

DH is leaving for his vacation to France tomorrow. Sucks not having any vacation time, but I wouldn’t want to go right now anyway…I need to be here to make sure the chicks pull through this. He is meeting a couple of friends of his from college over there and they are going sightseeing at WW2 museums and sights so I’d be bored out of my scull anyway. And he deserves a break after being such a wonderful help to me this weekend. I couldn’t have made it without him. He is a self-starter and even though he is not into the chickens, he does things to help without any prodding whatsoever and even volunteers to help do things I haven’t even thought of yet.

Ok I am in love with my new friend. He/she is lonely though.

Congrats, the obsession begins as NOTHING compares to the weep weep of a gosling

I am WAY behind!!!

Dont get offended, but while they are a project I am going to stay rather tight lipped on what we plan to use to further the color/pattern/project along for now. I feel its in the best interest for color/pattern at this time

sorry you have had a rough few weeks. I hope the problems are behind you and once again you can enjoy the coop build, the birds and your fabulous art work

We take care of health issues first- the breeding stock has no known genetic issues and what we grow up is always looked over and if they are not to our standards they go into the general population pen where they are egg layers for eating or grown to be dinner. We have have some cross beaks and we don't kill them immediately. We have a little Easter Egger that we hatched and my girls love her to death- she was never put into breeding obviously but, she is getting to live her life out happily. We have only one pair of breeding BLRW's right now because the colors were not what we wanted in our stock- and so- we have chicks growing up and we are hoping that they will be the colors we want and we can add them to our stock. As far as chicks/birds from GFF- I have never had the really rare stuff- all my chickens are ones they have been working on for a while- probably why I don't see problems in them. Back to culling- if a chick has a spralled leg or cross beak we don't automatically kill it- we see if it can survive and if it can we give it a large pasture to free range on and live a happy life. The birds that we are focusing on we look up the standards on and go from there. We tried to start breeding Mottled Houdans but, all the ones we found we were not happy with the coloring on. We got eggs from a swapper- but, nothing ever developed- we had found a breeder when we first got started that had perfect Houdans- but we continually lost birds from her so, after this last batch of eggs we are giving up. Our Australorps have been culled from about 30 birds to now we have 7 hens and 2 roosters. So yes, we do go by standard and we are really picky.
