My favorite on their site were the tiger bronze, but they were all out of them last year.

Deann, the poult I hatched last year was raised in my silkie pen (his tutors). When I got the poults from Porter's, he got moved in with the turkeys...............he cried pitifully for days!!!! I felt so sorry for him.
Oooh poor thing. Does he still think he is a chicken?

You guys are awesome! I still haven't ordered my apple and peach trees, put in my raised beds or anything. I'm hoping to order asparagus and more strawberries tomorrow or next week. If I could butcher turkeys, I'd be further on my way to self-sufficiency. G won't let me get anymore sheep or a jersey cow though, and I haven't been seeing deer during hunting season. Maybe this year will be different though, since we have deer coming to our little pond and I can actually shoot them here.
Have you tried butchering the turkeys??? It is tough, but not as bad as I thought it would be. I cry, but I guess I should only worry when it doesn't affect me. I have my breeding turkeys and the rest are named either Christmas or Thanksgiving. I just keep telling myself that for each one I butcher, it is one less that has to live in factory farms next year. It helps me....that and getting them drunk!!!

I have never had one crow but have heard it happening, and I think it is not that un-common.  I think it mostly happens in flocks that do not have roosters.

I  have a hen that switched to a roosters.  She laid eggs until she was about 10 months, then stopped and within a couple of month her comb, waddles and spurs grew and then I knew... she made the switch.  Hens don't actually become roosters, but they can get a hormonal imbalance and take on male traits such  which is what happened to Steve.  Steve no longer lays eggs, or crows she is just Steve.  Steve is short for Steve McQueen.

I can't stop laughing about Steve! How bizarre. Please do post a pic! :D

Ok....here is my suspect hen Hershy:

Serama or Orlandsk??

ETA: She is about 10 weeks, she is sitting on my knee for size comparison. She was chocolate brown when she hatched....hence the name.

It doesn't make me feel better......

. You need your starts.....maybe by July!!! Peaches are one of the only things I just can't do here, but we have apricots and plums!

Man....I am frightened to imagine what I could do with 6 acres!!! But, having only one forces me to have a precision and efficiency that is really interesting, maddening and inspiring!!! I have done a ton of studying and researching on micro gardening. It is amazing! We can produce over 12,000 pounds of perennial fruits alone with the micro-orchards and briars and about 14,000 pounds of vegetables between the raised beds and still have over 1/2 acre of lawn. It has been quite a project. Mother Nature does not seem to appreciate that I need a little cooperation from Her though!
I would love to see pictures of your operation.

I have to thank Mrs Mooncat and ya'll for introducing me to Seramas. They are a perfect solution for Urban chicken flocks. I have sold so many city families on them as a breed and family pet!!!! I am super excited about the urban farming possibilities with them.

No, he got used to them and struts around with the best of them.

Quote: My Tiger Bronze have been ordered since last September, I believe, and they should be here in May. I am getting six of them (the limit). They were my favorite too. Porter's is only two hours from me.

I just love them, but I have 13 adult turkeys right now and 60+ eggs in the incubator. I'm not sure what I'd do with more, what with having a 15 poult min and all. I just wish I had gotten them in last year's order. Maybe eggs from you next year????????
