Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

I personally would be more than willing to pay shipping costs on chicks in place of eggs with the abysmal hatching rates that I have had since January. I think we should leave the rules as is, and the person offering chicks should put in the offer that additional postage is to be paid by swappee.

As a matter of fact, if anyone owes me multiple egg swaps and is a hatchaholic that enjoys shipping chicks feel free to offer me that option by PM. LOL

That is just my two cents worth, which is worth about that much even with today's exchange rates.

same here!

Something I've been thinking about, I'm not trying to start a fight, but I would like some honest feedback. Please don't bash me. It's ok if you don't like my ideas. I'm just hoping for some open discussion on this.

Per the established swap rules, the person offering is responsible for shipping whether they offer eggs or chicks. Offering to ship six chicks does not seem to be an equitable trade off to offering six eggs. May I propose that we change the rules a bit?

- If a 50% hatch is considered good for shipped eggs, would it be fair to offer 3 chicks?

- I also propose that those offering chicks be allowed (but not required) to wait to ship until the same swapee claims two or more chick swaps?

- Can the claimer be responsible for reasonable shipping fees? For example, I shipped chicks a couple of weeks ago. Shipping was $35. If I had shipped eggs, shipping would have been around $10. In this example, I would ask the swapee to cover an additional $15.

If these proposals are acceptable, I would still suggest the first offer be either PP or 6 eggs available in two weeks or less with chicks only as additional offers.

Thoughts?
I think that is reasonable- I know some people ship them for no extra and don't thing twice about it- and I think that is fine. I think if you want to offer 3 chicks in place of eggs you should inform the swapper that they would be responsible for the shipping and that they would have to have 2 or more swaps to be eligible.

I have a dreadful hatch happening now...Nothing. I intend to disinfect my old LGs this weekend, and transfer the remaining eggs into them. Then I can see what's going on. Everyone is developing! Just not hatching. I've tried hatching them in the cabinet, and still using the Hovabator as a hatcher. Lousy hatchs, from developed eggs. I'm murdering clutch after clutch.

I must sort this out. I'm about ready to quit trying to hatch anything at all.
It has helped me emmensely to stop turning and put in lock down about three days earlier than normal. I do it day 15 and my hatch rates exploded.

^ Reposting from yesterday. They weren't clear and after these, I believe I am clear for spring swaps!

Weekend plans?
Depends on if Dewey is working or not. If he isn't:
- Truck load of shavings
- Clean coops
- Move birds around
- Build cage bases *
- Build a new brooder... or two *
- Move chicks around *
(* are things I can do without him)

Other that the asterisked items, things I can do myself...
- Clean tote brooders
- Clean cat carriers and cages for chickens.

I'd also like to move the Khaki Campbells out of the small dog kennel to the big duck pen and move the geese to the large dog kennel. Or leave the geese as they are and move the ducks to the big kennel... Then, I can move the small dog kennel and try to take real pics of my birds!

I doubt I will get half of that done. I'm to fat and lazy. If it's to cold, I won't be doing anything but build brooders and cage bottoms. Maybe move ducks and take pics.

ETA: I am considering starting some landscaping around the house, too. I want to put raised beds in and since I think flower gardens are pointless and a waste of time and effort, I am going to use my beds for veges! And a few flowers (I have tulips and mums I'd like to keep and I am going to steal viola from my mom for a border).

I was in the same boat with horrible hatches until this week. Bunches of them made it to lockdown and then quit. But Tuesday, I had 17 eggs from Donna due to hatch and 15 of them made it wonderfully! About time things got better!

How many of you put in a copy of your NPIP paper every time you ship chicks? Of all the birds I've ever received, I have never gotten a copy of the slip for NPIP. But when my NPIP vet was here in December, he only gave me one copy of the paper for crossing state lines (sorry I don't remember what it's called) and told me that technically, to follow the rules for certification, he would have to come every time I wanted to mail birds and give me a signed form that they were okay for shipment. Is this what you have been told by yours?

I have several groups of birds that need new homes (light sussex chicks and a SQ gold laced wyandotte cockerel) and I really don't want to have to take time off from work to have him come out and approve them before I can get them in the mail.

My turner timer motor blew right about the time this batch of eggs went in... this is so far turning out to be the best hatching in months, without ANY turning.

I got a booklet of forms signed and ready to go. No need for them to come back out for each shipment either.

I am doin a happy chicken dance!!!!

I can't even see into the hatching tray of my Sportsman due to the row of Polishes peering out at me from ColdUpNorth!!! They are about the cutest things ever. Not sure what else is hatching cuz I can't see over there little polish head.

And....I had to get out my two tabletop incubators and double stack.....this is getting out of hand here!!!!
