Once I have my flocks set, I don't plan to bring anymore birds in. So I think that is line breeding: father to daughter, son to mother.
Well, I've done it now...I ordered a copy of the SOP from the APA. I am now instantly impatient for it to get here now. A little excited![]()
Some evil people wouldn't let me win the Blue Double Laced Barnvelder chicks on RBA for my $1 bid.It was still fun to daydream for those 90 minutes I was the high bidder.![]()

I just put my 6 of my CCL ladies in with a Rhodebar roo. Chicks will be sexable and lay pretty green eggs. They're 23-24 weeks old now so we're on egg watch!
That is my preferred plan. 2 pens for breeding. If you have a layer pen you can just rotate them in and out of the breeding pen. Some of my breeds I will not be able to do that so I will have to use father daughter breedings or mother son.I keep reading that is the best way to do it to improve the type/etc.... but I also read somewhere that it's best to have 2 lines with unrelated roosters... so that eventually you can breed back the female offspring to the rooster of the other line? That's the part I'm worried about, mostly b/c I don't have a ton of space for lots of different pens.... hmmmmmm
Yeah turkeys!I'm setting eggs tomorrow morning, too!I set something about every other day. Every time I put something in lockdown there are spaces to be filled, so I fill em. It just looks nicer when the bator is full. It's purely for ascetic purposes you know. And my first set of turkey eggs go into lockdown on Monday. I am so nervous!![]()

Awe don't give up on them! Turkeys are so worth it.i would hatch them out for everyone if I could.I am giving up on turkeys again. Out of all the eggs I have had from krazykat and Profti, I have 2 turkeys. The last 4 blue slate, all started to develop. One made it to lockdown. It internally pipped then died. It was a blue one too....the one that hatched previously was a splash... cute...but wanted a blue. Why do I stink at hatching turkeys???On that note, I am going to bed. Busy day tomorrow!!
Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!
Turkeys are a-hatching! Gotta rearrange the nursery again today!
