Agreed! That's why I'm leaving it to more experienced chicken folks.

I'm off to paint a chicken coop while standing on one leg. It's the first day warm enough to do it and these chicks need to get outside NOW.

Good luck. It is supposed to be 80 degrees here today, and I am stuck inside getting EOY fixed assets ready for auditors.

They are a parti color bird and they are the hardest color to work with. Then you have the eggs. VERY hard to get a nice bird with the stock floating around. You have to start with something and work on them for a long time. Most are good for the colored eggs, but you don't usually get a good bird if you just want dark eggs.... they are new and need lots of work. LONG term project. Very few people have really good birds and most of them aren't parting with the GOOD birds.

All Marans breeders are in the same boat.... a work in progress.

I think my cute little baby chickies (who are actually 5 weeks old now) just grew from babies to chookzillas overnight. O_O I went to clean out their poopies from their coop this morning...and I swear I thought our Yorkie snuck in there and poo'd in the coop. Clearly she didn't (she's not an outside dog) but...wow. 5 week old chicks have some really big poops!!

Malted milk ball sized - is that normal for 5 week old chicks? They have chick grit, chick starter and some oats to eat, along with the grass and bugs, and fresh water. [Edited to add] There are also quite a lot of earthworms in our soil.

They are clearly sleeping in the nest area instead of roosting inside the coop, which is weird since they roost all the time in the outside run. Yes, the roosts inside are higher than the nesting area but the nesting area is where the majority of the poo was. Should I block the nest box off with some wood until my female is POL?

crfarms I have a question..... Why are you crossing the Lavs with Coppers? Are the Lavs Copper too? Will they look like a porcelain? I know lav genes dilute the red genes too, just trying to figure out if I might want some.... I saw those the other day and forgot or I would have claimed some already.... I need more projects, even with Marans like a hole in the head

I would have thought a solid black (not a copper that look black but a solid black) would have been a good cross, never thought about using coppers......
