If one wanted to start a silver laced project, where would you begin? Yes, I'm very challenged when it comes to genetics and colors. I bought a book, made no sense to me so i swapped it!!!

Get my a list of the color Orps you have and I'll see if I can come up with a "recipe"

Thanks everyone! Now another project to add to the list!!!!!!!!!!!! DH gonna have a stroke when I tell him how many more pens I need by Spring...

How do you get the silver carrying hen to start with?
Like a silver ameraucana, silver birchen, just a hen that carries silver...just have to be choosy about what other genes you want to breed out. Like making new ameraucanas, most are going with crossing with orps or D'anvers....combs and types will have to be breed out but it is a lot easier than going with a D'uccle and breeding out feathered legs.

I hate dealing with frozen water.

I do 5 gallon buckets with water nipples, which seems to help as the water freezes from top-down, mostly. At least until it gets so cold it'll freeze from the sides and bottom in, as well. I've thought about doing one of those tube-like fish tank heaters in each bucket -- but I keep being afraid they'd explode or something.

I'm happy for those of you who are bringing new ones into your flock soon, congratulations. And for those who are doing project lacing and other projects...have fun! I'm getting 1 pair of chocolate Seramas but not until March...the weather is just too poopy on their shipping route until around that time.

Ok I am here getting ready to bring some chicks over to a lady who wants them. I am selling all my cochin chicks because they have vulture hocks :( she is aware of that and doesn't care. As I was looking over the chicks, I found this one... Unsure if they are vulture hocks or not... Opinions? One is a rooster with what I think is obvious hocks... But I am unsure of the hen in the 2st picture.

I just sent a pair of silver sussex to a breeder that is breeding them to her gold laced orp's for this very project. She is a very good breeder and very excited to see the project. My pullet had a surprise for her on arrival, an egg in the box with her!
