Donna,
I was thinking Blue also. Birchen Orps would work too. The first generation GLO x Brr would not show Silver laced but the second generation would start to show some. The other color I thought about was Columbian but that is just as rare as the SLO. I do know Corancher is working on Birchen Orps. I have a cockerel hatched from her eggs but he is Gold Birchen. I have more of her Birchen eggs in the incubator nor.

Either way, creating the lacing is a hard project with tons of culls.

Personally, if I were going to cross to another breed, it would be Sussex (white slin, single comb)

Just my humble opinion.

What color Sussex would you use? I have light and speckled.

Hey there! I have BBS, Gl, Lav, jubilee, LC, and buff orps. Will have access to partridge orps in spring. Any recipes for me? I do also have a sl Wyandotte pair.

I'd take my best Blue hen (best lacing) and cross her to your GLO. I would not use Buff, LC, or Jubilee. If I'm correct, they have the red gene that is hard to breed out.

When Gold and Silver are crossed, offspring are sex linked if its a gold male over a silver female.

I would think that would work better too... the yellow skin is hard to get rid of, it will just keep popping up unless you diligently test mate all your breeders. The birchen would only be to introduce the silver into the GLO, then you will have a lot of breeding AGAINST the gold..... silver is sex linked too, not sure how that will help.

If I've learned anything while raising chickens, it is build the barn before you paint it. If you introduce another breed, not only are you working on color, but also type. If it doesn't look like a(n) (insert breed here) it isn't a(n) insert breed here.

Just to back up my comments, I have a degree in Biology with a passion for genetics. I'm still learning but the things I've posted I've either seen first habd or done research on.

On the heritage thread they were talking about BACK breeding, that is to a breed that was used to create the breed you are working with and if you are going to out cross they recommended staying in the same class of birds.

How far down do chicks usually bury themselves in sand when they dustbathe?? O_O Right now we have an easter egger that has buried her entire belly in the sand...all that is visible is her backside, tail and of course her face...and part of her neck. She seems quite content half-buried.

CluckyCharms, I've seen 'em work themselves in there pretty darn deep! It might be worth checking them for mites, though -- just in case she's dust-bathing so enthusiastically because she's extra-itchy :)

I've been wanting to get a good basic introductory book on chicken breeding & genetics for a while. Anyone have a favorite they've found especially useful?

I was following that for a while but got fed up with all the argueing where it was "only my way is right". The original Orpington (Black Orp) was a mixture of Black Langshan, Black Minorca, and Rock (yellow skin). Time for me to reaearch the other colors.
