our own creations?? Sort of... well lav orps started out as projects. Anything new that is not a recognized color, etc..

yes it is! My first 11 are going on a week.

Well, around 10:30 I might've been cursing you a little bit... lol!!! I have a really hard time just skipping whole pages -- let alone dozens of pages -- of a thread. It's why I only really participate on a few.

yep what she said. normally when someone starts a new color for a breed it's a project. They are not recognized by the APA and most will take a long time unless there are several dedicated breeders to breed toward the standards and take them to shows and get qualifying shows for them. Can be a long process. But there is something about a purple bird laying dark eggs that sounds really neat!

I always kind of took it as a work in progess... So in other words, it's not, necessarily -- it could at least in theory be a variety of bird the breeder has actually gotten to where he/she wants it, but simply isn't recognized by the APA yet? Is that right?

I always assumed the work in progress because I thought what it meant was a bird that wouldn't breed true -- that the characteristics bred for were still hit-or-miss. But in that case, all the frizzle/silky varieties would be "projects"... Or wait, maybe not, since you can predict statistically how many of a variety you should get from a specific cross, can't you? Like the BBS?
