Our girls had a traumatic second night in the coop...a snake got in and killed one. They were a bit scared of it after that...I put a light on a light sensor in our coop that comes on at dusk for a couple hours. and they seemed to like that and want to go in.

How big are the girls and what sort of snake?

The circled red parts are where they fall asleep around 6pm. Mainly they use the two by the door because those are wider than the ones on the sides.
Mine that don't go in on their own, that is basically the same place they perch. The only way to get them going in is to not offer them any other place to roost. I too have heard that putting a light in the coop will draw them in, I haven't tried that yet though. My only concern would be sudden darkness for them when they aren't up on their roosts. They seem to be confused by that.

I'm so sorry for your loss. :( Did you catch the snake? I hope the rest are able to find some peace soon.

Ours are confused a lot with or without light, so I'm not sure I would be using the light. lol They do have a "porch light" on their coop (it came with it) but I haven't used it as yet, so I know the light isn't it. With regard to the roosting spots, there are also moveable roosts in the run, but I took them down because of this little issue. Then they just decided to use the stabilizer beams instead, lol! (not much I can do about those, they are attached) =/ It is 62 degrees right now at a little after 9pm, so I can see why they wanted to be outdoors, but my worry is that they will not go in the coop when it dips to 30 later on in December.

Well...I'm out for a while. I just noticed Netflix has Santa Claus: The Movie with Dudley Moore ....time to feel like a kid again. :)

they were only 5 weeks and it was a blacksnake...poor things. It only killed one, but couldn't actually eat it...just slimed the head and neck and spit it out. the coop is snake-proof now!!! now it is like coop knox!

I'm planning to attach a piece of wire mesh or something of the sort over the side bars so they can't use them. Even zip ties until they break the habit. If there is no place to perch at night but in the coop, that's where they'll go.

Now, if I could just teach my bantam polish to stop roosting on their ramp! Maybe I need to remove the cross cleats so they'll slide off!

oh, this was a while ago....I was just thinking that a light inside yours might make them WANT to go in.

Oh, and I DID catch the snake....I relocated him REALLY far away. I don't have anything against snakes...but alot of things that I used to like I am now having second thoughts about now that I have Chickens...like bald eagles and hawks.
