I wish I could get Nutrena around here. Nowhere sells it for poultry.I feed starter to the babies and then they go to Nutrena All Flock (22%) and that is where everyone stays. The exception, I feed turkey/gamebird to the turkeys & the quail.

I have a friend who owns a produce store. I leave couple buckets with them and they bring the cuttings and cull produce to me every week day. My girls (and roos) do prefer I cut it up for them but will peck at it I f I don't. I am beginning to think I spoil them too much. I forgot to mention they also get dried or live meal worms three times a week. When I was young and on the farm Mom's chickens lived on what was on sale, free range and water. When I decided to get back into raising chickens I went with the recommendations I found for their breed. I knew it should be simpler than this.I prefer 22% for everybodysome old breeders have said Dual Purpose/Heritage breeds do better with higher protein. I do supplement with cracked corn. When conditioning I also add oats and Black Oil Sunflower seeds but I like the KISS method (keep it simple stupid). Its easier for me.
I don't have a food processor or leftover produce. I usually buy them lettuce when it is on sale. During the summer they get grass clippings.
Same here. I cannot leave both starter/grower and layer feed out free choice... They will ONLY eat the starter/grower
That is outrageous!! This past summer it was only 12.15/50 lbs I wish I had stocked up on it.
I know, right? It's because I live in an rural area adjacent to some very developed suburban areas and there is only ONE feed store basically so they can pretty much charge whatever they want. I had NEVER seen grass hay for $12/bale until I moved here and I nearly had a heart attack!!
Quote: I thought lettuce was "zero food?" I thought there wasn't anything good/nutritious in it for them... but I don't have any sources to back this up, so I'll shut up now![]()
