RIP Spike:

He was "not right" for several days and I went to pick him up today and he was having serious trouble breathing.
I think he had gapeworm. He died in my arms. but I am glad because I saw what was going on so now I know to treat the other chickens.

off to try and figure out where I can get a different wormer.
do you need a prescription for Levamisole?
So sorry to hear that. He was a beautiful rooster.

thanks. it was just so weird. I should have known something was seriously wrong...he wasn't crowing right for the last week.
and he was keeping his head sunk into his neck feathers... I thought he was just cold.
He convulsed when I turned him over onto his back and then his neck lolled and I righted him and tried to hold his head in a normal position, but he was gaping and not getting any air. I actually considered mouth-to-mouth but I couldn't figure out how to do it. I guess the worms shifted and blocked his airway...retrospect. at the time I was just flummoxed.

I will never get used to losing animals.

I am so sorry. He was beautiful..... Here people really understand. Other people say things like "it was just a chicken" but we know better. They are pets and friends.

Pysankigirl, I am sorry. I know how you are feeling-my little Cream Legbar cockerel "Vanilla Ice" died this morning too.

I have only had him for about two weeks (thanks to Rachael

but he was the cutest, sweetest little guy. He had mites terribly, but till I realized it, he was too far gone to save. I have dusted all of the other chickens, though, and will do it again in about a week. I do have 7 others to choose from, but he was easily my favorite.

RIP Spike:

He had turned into a very good Rooster...he took care of the girls
and was polite to me and my husband. He is missed already.
