You are absolutely right, of course. I'm restocking after losing all my birds...over 100 this fall...to MG. MG is not a required test for NPIP, although you can ask for it. Since it can be carried by wild birds and can pass through the egg, most people don't bother. But a carrier can easily slip past quarantine and infect your whole flock. When I was under state quarantine, I found that they don't even try to track it (just make you kill off your birds or try to test out...our chickens all had to be destroyed, but we saved the turkeys.) as they figure at least 50% of the birds in this state are carriers. Still, I'm going NPIP because I rather hope that if I limit to NPIP then I should increase my chances of getting birds from places that do some biosecurity, anyway. Maybe. Hopefully. We'll see.

I waited to be tested until we moved, and had my new pens built (thank you DH!!). In Florida it is free, someone comes out from the Dept. of Agriculture. They test for Pullorum-typhoid, AI, and Exotic Newcastle Disease. The blood tests are done right then and resulted, they send of the mouth swabs which takes about 2 weeks. You have to be tested yearly.

Quote: Yeah, supposedly it is esp. bad if you live on a migratory waterfowl path or allow your birds to mingle with birds in a 'wild' pond. So sorry that must have been so heartbreaking. So many give up after that. I am glad, and maybe someday grateful, that you choose to come back into poultry as who knows what contributions you will have in the coming years. It takes more courage to pick yourself up and jump again after a bad fall than to just never take any risk at all. Hat's off to you!

Pictures, finally!!!

Still about 20 eggs to go -- I see three pips at the moment, and one industriously rocking egg :) Plus the four that I left in there just in case that I was 99% certain hadn't developed, but what the heck, right? Plus there's six more eggs still in the turner (off), but theyre not due to hatch till Friday.

MUCH better than my last two hatches!

I think FL is still under Grant money. I don't know what it will be if/when that runs out. I think the hope is that enough people will have signed up that it will become 'habit'. Ours is rather expensive I think so if you go to the state log it prints out the names and addresses of all NPIP holders and I think ours is maybe a page or page and half of names. Very few percentage for a whole state. But you gotta sell a lot of eggs and stuff as a hobby raiser (no tax write-offs, like me) to cover the cost -- (?) 85 an hour travel + farm +tester + labx2 +app for basics only. And some states are annual visits and some are bi-annual and AI watch cert is 3mos, if I recall correctly.......

So, Yes Floridians are in the pink to get certified right now.

I LOVE your Early Warning System!!

Congrats on the new babies. Babies make everything better, no matter what kind of baby it is!

I see you have gone hi-tech and went for the "CAT SCAN" hatching testing

LOL!!!! Yep

Although after this hatch, I'm moving the incubator upstairs to the 'warm' room -- the downstairs is really too cold. I mean, it's fine, it doesn't affect the temp inside the incubator but hoo boy! Any time I open the door, it plummets.

And yep, HollowOakFarm! They surely do

OMG no Internet for round a day and now so behind! I'm late, but ty cpl for all your hard work and MW for picking it up and our mods for stalking and making things work like mad.
They don't sell outstanding quality birds. The breeds definitely need work once someone gets them. I think they import what they can get their hands on and go from there. It's really up to the buyer to work the breeds to the standard or their liking. Like the floppy combs on the Legbar roosters. Then again it stinks to pay all that money for birds to find some have defects.
Ya, they say they go for "hardy" not "show" usually. MY ccl roo is floppy combed. My biggest worry with them is they bring in a small amount of stock. CCls got a big amount wit 3 unrelated pairs. A lot of the imports have 1 or 2 pairs, yes?
Hi,
I have been researching about shipping chicks, and cannot seem to get a straight answer. Do you need to be npip to ship day olds or older birds? When you ship does the po even ask for npip papers? Thanks.
Welcome. This got answered better then I could.
I've shipped older birds. This will be my first time shipping day olds. Someone needs to write up a Shipping Day Olds for Dummies guide, from setting the eggs to shipping the chicks.
yes, the links for these are awesome, ty.
I didn't lose the eggs from my incubator accident last night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HUZZAH!
What breed of broody did this to you? I will be relying on my broody hens to hatch most of my eggs for me, as I can't keep the temperatures steady enough for my incubator in my wood stove heated house. I have one Silky broody and one Phoenix broody so far, and just added another Silky broody and her daughter. If that was a Silky.. I may have to change my plans!
broodies are fickle creatures. I would suggest having an in case incubator. I have had a few girls stop on day 19, she thinks she is a serama. I think had 50 chicks hatch and 3 girls no longer interested, it was an evil day. if I'm worried she has quit, I take the eggs but leave gold balls so if they are just taking a break she doesn't decide her eggs were eaten and quit. Also watch for nest confusion. I have a broody that goes and sits on whatever egg was laid last and leaves her clutch alone. She only gets chicks, no more eggs for her. I have silkies, showgirls Marans and Orphingtons that will sit on chicks. Silkies are my best, but they try and bite off WAAY more then they can chew. Sparkles will steal eggs from everyone till the pile is bigger then her. But every hen will be different, thus a spare incubator.
SHAMELESS.... Just SHAMELESS.... I did.... there are some good ideas there. I hope they post them in some LOGICAL Place so people can find them.
Those were posted in their spots by BYC! not my fault!

They are indeed! I'm not a fan but you can eat them. It's just fondant and gel coloribg
I don't like it either, but MAN its beautiful and lets the artist out. Awesome work, you are great with your hands
Ah, I was discussing Texas with my vet--as they are strict there, too. He told me quite emphatically not to ship or carry anything over to Texas without him first needing to re-inspect what is being sent the first time I send there. Then he would sign off on the form--a VS form 983. I assumed it would be the same for other states that have tougher guidelines, too.

Good to know VA could be done easily. Isn't CA tough, too?
Its easy to receive in ca.. Its hard to sell anything for food, even eating eggs. That may be what you are thinking of. OR one day ill get in BIIG trouble!
