Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Good news! I have three sets of eggs in the incubator now. The first are the ones I put under the broody originally. I thought they weren’t fertile, (based on breaking open another egg for breakfast) but turns out they were! I candled last night and I think I have 5 developing out of 6!!! Three Barnevelder eggs, a dorking egg and a random olive egg I got from a friend here at work.

They are about ½ way through and I think I saw movement in all 5 of them!!!!! These were my non-shipped eggs. I am so friggin nervous…this is my first time, guys. I know I am going to screw this up! The other two sets are shipped and haven’t been in there long enough to candle yet, and some of them are Marans, so I won’t be able to see anything anyways.

I guess I need to find another ‘bator to put the first set on lock-down with! And a hydro-thingie to see what the humidity is.

any recomendations on a hydro thingie?

Scared to build my own incubator. but trying to gather courage. is there a digital thermostat available that would be good for home-made incubators?
This is the one I use http://www.ebay.com/itm/110V-10A-ST...619?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f20c52113 I like it because you can also set it up to exhaust air if it gets too hot. Since my hatching debaukle of 113 degrees and dead chicks an exhaust fan is a good idea. BUT mine has kept the temp pretty steady..... now my heating stuff can't keep up at nights when it gets really cold. That is MY problem not the thermostat.

They have these that are 220 and european too so make sure you get the 110 type. There are several sellers of them on Ebay.

Quote: Thanks for that link.... I may have to get some of those too.

BTW there is a link in my siggy about my incubators I built. I built a small one first and then the MEGA BATOR..... but even small bator use the same kinda stuff. I don't advocate a Water Heater Thermostat! NOT WORTH THE RISK... TRUST ME!

I cannot wait to get some this Spring...I swore Id never raise another MEAT bird but these are so different and they MOVE!!!

Me too. I don't need to raise the traditional meat bird when it's only 2 of us to feed. I can't wait to try different ways of finishing out their last weeks.

YUCK. I just went to a dirty disgusting farm nearby to look at some bantam Cochins. It was horrible. They where the type of people too, who thought they knew everything and I knew nothing. I had asked on the phone if the Cochins had vulture hocks, he didn't know what that is... Which is fine. Decided to check on them anyway. Turns out they all colors thrown together. Then I saw a pair of blue LF Cochins which I love. They where ok quality wise. Hen looked decent, legs left some to be desired. rooster seriously lacked in tail and wing structure. She tried to tell me they where worth $75 but she would sell them to me for $50. I may have paid $30. However the place is so gross I am seriously considering throwing my shoes away in town and buying a new pair before going back to my house.

Yes!! The CX s grossed me out:( the rapid growth and mess...not for me! BUT with these I can see raising to fill the freezers!! AND there's a processing place not far from me that's a great price! I have electric fencing now so I can see myself moving the fencing every week to allow fresh greens/bugs/ground and such!!! We'll see! I figure If I get them in Spring ( April) I can process by September after I have chosen how many I will keep for breeding:) I want to keep it small maybe just a quad...We are only a family of 4 but would like to put 20-25 birds in freezer every year:)

Oh I think I would have to stop and a whole change of clothes. Seriously how do people sell birds when they are in that kind of environment?

Is anyone in the Fort Worth area? I'm currently watching a friend's kids - which brings the total at my house to 7, between the ages of 7 and 13. My friend is currently in the Fort Worth area, and would probably be willing to pick up to pick up eggs for me if anyone was interested in a side swap for PP....Not sure about flying with chicks and how that would work....

Same here. The CXs were just way too much work. Constantly having to clean to keep the smell down. I could really enjoy a nice bird to raise for meat. We take ours up to a menonite family that processes for a good price. I'm hoping I can get him to process our rabbits too.
