Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Hey all, I will start shipping out a ton of eggs in the next few weeks so if you are waiting on eggs from me, mostly hen's choice then they should be coming soon. I do have a question and looking for a bit of feedback. I had a brief about 15 minute break out from my rhodebar pen where two of my girls got out when one of my sons went in. I saw one of the girls get "bred" by an easter egger. The other I don't think ever got "bred." So, big question is should I pull the rhodebars from my hen's choice for the next 3 weeks?. I have at least 4 hens laying. In the fuss of catching them I didn't actually pay attention to see if they were the laying hens. I have 7 hens in that coop. So, chances are pretty slim that you would end up with any mixed breed chick but wanted to make the tryst known just in case. I figure if it was me the small risk would be worth having rhodebar eggs. However, if you do NOT want to take the risk or overall if people think I shouldn't include those eggs, just let me know I and will hatch a lot of rhodebars for 3 weeks and watch closely. Had I been a thinking man instead of a crazy man chasing hens all over the farm, I would have put them in with my layers for 3 weeks and not had this problem. However, I was not a thinking man so I am left with this dilemma as I was seeing red toward my son and frantically trying to "fix it". 5 more seconds of thought and it wouldn't have been a problem at all.

So, generally what do you all think? include or no?
According to the speaker at our Backyard Pultry meet-up with Dr. Bramwell yesterday after one day (24 Hrs) back with the rooster (Rhodebar) she should be fertile by him if he mates her on her return to the pen. The last rooster to successfully mate her will sire the chick.

Questions I guess you could e-mai him. Check with HallFamily (Jim) to get the e-mail address.

I'll be setting 19 more eggs tomorrow.
7 Coronation Sussex over Light Sussex split for Coronation (did I state that right?).
7 Silver Phoenix
5 Silver Spangled Hamburgs

If you know which hen got bred why not just put her in your layer pen now.

Oh, that's very cool! Thank you for sharing that -- I didn't know that. I assumed it was like cats -- a question of sperm motility and vigor.

Actually I think Jim will be posting the video of the seminar on line for everyone that wants to can view it.
Not sure if he has already done that or not. Look for it when he does. He should be posting it on the Arkansas Thread when he gets that done.

I know of quite a few people who freerange their entire flock together during the fall and winter, then break them up into breeding pens for spring breeding/hatching. I always simply assumed they penned them for a month before collecting eggs for hatching. You know what they say about assuming...

Yes we do, newest chicks have some splashes in there too, very fun added color popping up. We have some POL Pullets from a super blue egger breeding who will join the ranks soon as well.
Looked at your site, love it!! I love that the background is white, so many sites have black backgrounds, I love the white/... When do you usually post your spring prices??

I had horses first which really just suck away your money so my DH loves my "useful" pets...except when they poo on the porch steps:lol:
Lol...sounds like my DH, but he seems to like watching chicken TV and has helped me winterize and comments on the welfare of the birds in this terrible cold snap we are having (-15 this am, ack!)
I don't understand your bookkeeping system. The first egg is around $1,000. Every egg after that is all profit.

Also keep forgetting to mention... WV... glad your mother is doing better, that is such good news!!

PapaBrooder... You probably have a 1000 PM"s to go through, but I can't take my eggs until probably at least the end of February... with the below zero temps, I don't think egg-scicles would incubate very well, lol...(although there probably wouldn't be any detached aircells, haha)

I saw some video on a wormer that you put on the back of the chickens neck?? So how does one decide what the "best" wormer/mite/lice medicine is, since ya'll have different experiences with different products, what are you reasons for using ceratin products rather than others?? I usually just use the cayenne from time to time, and given them pumpkin seeds as well, but if I did see that there was a problem, I am not against using medicine...
