Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Well, then it sounds to me like she got 3 Roos out of six and that is what I would say is a decent hatch ;)

Tell them that they must have incubated them for more males. To try to incubate for females next time.

I know what they mean though, I went and picked up chicks from a guy the next state over. He incubates all of his unsold eggs, so there are tubs and tubs of chicks in his basement! It was awesome and he showed us his incubators, and I was delighted. I got twelve chicks. Two of them died the next week (one was a tiny serama with chronic pasty butt). One of them looked like he had taken the shape of his egg, and walked like he had a muscular disease. I ended up with 2 girls, 8 boys, and 2 dead out of that batch. All three of the Welsummers were boys. At $5-8 a chick, I paid about $33 for a Dark Brahma Pullet and $33 for a Serama Pullet! I couldn't believe the bad luck, but what could we have done differently?

I am looking for Bantam Dark Cornish eggs. Does anyone know who may have some for sale or trade. Oh I am also looking for White Silky Duck eggs. I am currently looking into to see if I can order some from Holreads (spelling)

Yes, or perhaps those elusive auto-sexing FBCM eggs. The eggs have a light dot on the more round end for a boy and a light stripe on the side for a girl!

Welsummers are autosexing FYI ;)
I have seen the autosexing Marans on the swap... Never asked about them... Might hafts look into them!

I'd say, sounds like those 2 I gave you for free must have been Roos, they are great with dumplings : )

I just had a customer contact me regarding chicks sold to her early in the fall, these were sold straight run as they were from hatched eggs. 5 of the 8 turned out to be roos. Does anyone have a "canned" response for this when they are contacted? I mean, its obviously more than 50% but I have no control over these things.

Sorry you are disappointed, but that is the risk of buying straight run chicks at a young age. If you are seeking hens you might be interested in POL Pullets or laying hens. Both of these will run you significantly more than your inexpensive day olds as a straight run.

Have you been able to sex the gosling yet?
Do you sex the ducklings as well, or will they be straight-run?
