Wonderful news!!

I want to ferment chick starter for the quail I will be hatching. My trial was a cup of starter with water to cover and account for what the crumbles soak up, and about a tablespoon of acv with mother

Did you keep it at room temp? It won't ferment unless the temp is high enough.

Well, since it has been pretty warm here, I did it outside, but I guess low 60s high 50s at night is too low?
I left it for two days, it wasn't bubbly but had a mild mild mild fermenty smell, I fed it to my free rangers and they still ate it up. Maybe it wasn't enough acv?
I will try a couple other things before the quail hatch. I am expecting about 60 to hatch baring no disasters, quail babies make a lot of stinky poo.

how warm does it need to be? mostly my home is about 65-68 degrees. although it is a bit warmer in the basement with the pellet stove.

Just sold four dozen eggs. Eight bucks. Ah well. I've decided that I won't be hatching any meaties until it's warm enough to brood outside! I have a small group of people that wants me to keep them supplied with meat and eggs. I'd have to really dig through my expenses.

I keep my fermented feed in the garage and it will ferment even at 20 degrees, It just takes a little longer. It does not always get real bubbly, but you can smell it. I try to do 60% crumbles to 40% scratch grains. I add BOSS as well. I make it up 24 hours before I am going to start feeding and make up enough for about 4 days at a time. I use plastic storage containers and just push some up on a side and let the liquid drain a little. Mine like it still a little wet, so I don't drain it to much. I made my own ACV with apple peelings. I just keep adding to it and it is doing great! All my birds ducks included LOVE the fermented feed. I have never had anybody turn up their beaks to it. My ducks are friendliest at feeding time now. When I fed crumbles they would stay away while i was filling the feeder. Now they gather around quaking for dinner!
