Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Today started as a rather bad day for me. A week ago I hatched a Rhodebar rooster chick. My only one. Problem was it wasn't using one of its legs. I felt a knot on the leg joint. So I thought I would give it time and see. Nope, not using it. So I put him down this morning.

I had a juvie tolbunt polish rooster in with other juvies. I'm a complete believer now in raising crested breeds with crested breeds only. The other birds always pecked his crest out and I am assuming gave him some brain damage. I was going to put him down this morning too but he beat me to it. Found him dead in the coop this morning.

By far the worse for me was my Blue Silver Fox Doe. Skittish as heck. 3 weeks ago I came home to find she could not use her back legs. She was still eating and drinking. Was a lot more lovable now but couldn't be a bunny. I gave her time hoping she would get better but it never happened. So I put her down this morning too.

We have no heat in our home except for the wood heater in the living room.  That means that our bedroom temps drop every night and I'm assuming that changes it.  My room temp didn't drop last night as drastically, only a few degrees.  It is a still air Little Giant that holds 41 eggs.  Do you think it's the incubator?

I have had huge success with my LG's but I think Florida is very kind to the flaws of the LG. Definitely, by far, the most frustrating is stabilizing the temp, which will fluctuate hugely with outside drops or hikes in temps. Surrounding with a towel and putting in a closed cupboard has worked out well for me :).

I wouldn't give up hope, I was on a hatching thread once when someone's hatch started at day 22 (go figure???). Hoping for a successful hatch for you!

:( so yucky!!!

Ugh. I candled again and I'm starting to see development. Unfortunately, at day five, they look more like what I SHOULD have seen at day three. I'm going to drill a slightly bigger hole and try my candle thermometer to get an accurate temp. The two I have in there now were never both correct, but now they're further apart than they had been.

How long do you usually let the clears stay in the incubator? I've got 1 clear at day 7, and 2 possible blood rings.
It just depends on how confident you are with your candling. I usually pull clears and bloodrings at day 7. But, as long as nothing smells/weeps, it hurts absolutely nothing to leave them in there.

Dark eggs (brown or blue), I usually leave if I can't see clearly. With a dark egg, I find a clear glows when you candle it. The developing chick just makes it look darker/fuller.

I leave clears until day ten or later. Blood rings I sometimes leave until lock down. Earliest on them is day ten for me. I consider myself experienced in candling, but they are living things afterall and all living things will play by their own rules at times. :)

I had seven serama eggs shipped recently. Six were developing strongly, but the seventh was clear. On day ten, the seventh had some delayed development in it. It looked to be several days behind. They all hatched withing expected hatching times. I still have all seven down there, cocky as a serama should be. :)
