Just got an email from Ideal - last minute over-hatch special -

We have an overhatch of Surprise Special Pullets and Straight Runs left for shipment TODAY! Must be shipped today, 1/23. Surprise Special pullets only $1.70 each and Straight Runs only $1.20 each until we have sold out.
You must call to place your order.
1-800-243-3257 option 2

Minimum order is 25 chicks per order. Regular small order charges and air mail charges will be applied. Special is not valid on previously placed orders. Varieties can not be combined to receive special price.

(I did ask them what the difference was between their assorted chick and surprise special - here's the answer I got: " Assorted chick we try to give an actual assortment of at least 4 or 5 breeds. Surprise special could be all one breed although we try very hard for that not to happen.")

Good morning all! It's a beautiful day here (finally)!!! We have desperately needed some sunny days to dry up the muck from all the rain. My birds are going to think they're in the tropics today- we're getting up to a toasty 70! I'm sorry for all of you with the extreme cold. I wouldn't be able to handle it!

Sorry I did see that.  I don't know what that means.  I noticed that my fresh eggs did that more than my store eggs.  It also occurred to me that the fresh eggs were no in the fridge either.  Once I put them in the fridge before I cook them I don't see that problem any more.

Thank you for responding! I didn't think about refrigeration possibly making a difference. These were straight from the nest boxes. It worries me a bit about shipping for hatching though, because of course those are very fresh and unrefrigerated as well. Hmm.

:frow   G'morning all.  Brrr.....single digit temps this morning!

I had a rude awakening this morning.  A beautiful blue silkie pullet that I hatched from sebrightmom crowed this morning.  :th This thing has a crest to die for, big and puffy.  And it's a rooster.  Just my luck.

Sounds like our luck is very similar lol! It's usually my favorite chick from each hatch that ends up being a boy.

I hope you wake up to him feeling better!

He's MUCH better this morning! Not 100% but definitely on the mend! He's gotten his sense of humor back. We went up last night to change his sheets because he sweated so much that the sheets were damp. He thought he'd actually wet the bed. But as we were changing him, he looked up smiled and said, "what are you guys doing waking me up again? Don't you know I need to sweep to get better?!?!? Oh you guys!" Cracks me up! And I actually got a solid 6-7 hours!

I got that too. Up here that would be like sending the chicks do death though. I got them the second week of Jan and it was 20 degrees warmer here I still ultimately lost 12 of 30. Its a very good deal if you live in warmer weather. I believe you're saving 40 cents each or so.

One of my students once asked me if I could provide her with balut. I got to tell her no, and she was so disappointed!

Good morning, Beth!

My friends aunt is from the Philippines and she asks me to do this all the time chicken or duck. She said its best when they have a little but of feathers :sick

So glad he's doing much better.

Ok, we're having a discussion. My passenger side wiper is broken. It works fine, but when you lift them to clean the windshield of dirt or snow, it falls askew. I just pop it back into place. It just doesn't LOCK into place. G is telling me to change it. My theory though is I replace in spring, because the blades get eaten up by the ice. He's saying just to replace it now. Am I being TOO cheap by not replacing it now and again in spring? They're only a few bucks, but stuff adds up and it still does its job.
