Mareks can be transmitted by mosquito but is more readily transmitted by dander and poop of wild birds. The vaccine is actual a strain derived from turkey mareks which doesn't harm chickens but according to the pathologist it seems that most strains are mutating rendering vaccination less effective. She did stress that good husbandry and cleanliness was the best tool against mareks though.
yes, but if flocks free range aren"t they exposed to wild bird dander and poo every day?

yep. which is why they suspect that there are TONS of flocks that are actual potential carriers. The hard part is that she said there's no simple test for Mareks on a live bird. She said there are some stain tests that can be done to try and identify a strain but she said that it's difficult because of the way it binds to the DNA. It looks like a great deal of other viruses apparently. She said that there are a few stains but they aren't very reliable at all. I guess that a bunch of them a false negatives. That due to the nature of the virus it only tests truly positive if it's active. I'm no avian pathologist and it's been a long time since I was premed so my science could be somewhat off but in layman's terms it's inactive/hiding until the immune system becomes compromised turning it on. It then starts to send out or grow lymphoma cells which just keep replicating and cause lesions on the organs because there are higher concentrations of blood. Some birds will get past it and not all will contract it but you can never know for sure unless they activate and you get a positive stain or have them necropsied.

I feel out of breath and I just typed that.....

Does mareks pass through the egg to the chick?
Nope. I think the only mycroplasma, and I'd have to verify that carries through to the embryo is MG. It's a bacteria not a virus. Mareks definitely does not pass through. If it did, I would no longer have bresse and would be having all the other birds tested.

Which interestingly enough after this whole thing I'm getting NPIP certification! I'm also closing my flock. I'm pretty sure that Sonew's the same way. Only day-olds and eggs now. It's just too risky for me. It makes me sad but it's just been so devastating and frustrating. All the energy and emotion invested makes it difficult. Maybe one day I'll be open to it again but from people I know have the healthiest animals possible for transport. Like COF!

Ok. I'm an addict. I am no longer in denial. 105 chicks in my brooders from Ideal today. Ok, those are not all mine.

Oh, and DH said yes to the yorkie!! So I am trading some chickens for that.... does that count???? And the 105 are bantams, so really is that like 50? Or maybe even 25?? Only 1/3 of them are mine anyway.

The only problem with bantam chicken math is bantams don't poop a third . That is a lot of compost you are making.
