Frozen rain and sleet in the morning here

Sometimes it can be bad. I have not watched the news yet. I hope not too bad. One time the power was out for WEEKS. 10 years later you could still tell the trees that were the worst hit and were still leaning one way or another, not straight any way.

Ugh, my poor little boys. DS3 was in the hospital here a couple nights ago with a 106 fever. Got it down pretty fast, he's been bouncing around 100/101 through today but feeling much better. Noticed tonight the lymph nodes on the right side of his neck are enlarged. Really hope that's just reaction to whatever virus he's fighting off. CBC/Strep/Influenza all negative, blood culture still pending. Now DS2 is running a low grade fever. We've already been through two rounds of vomiting/diarrhea bugs and a mild cold or two. Don't think their flu shots helped them much this year. Darn preschool...they were healthy until DS3 started that! Seems like the whole household has been sick in one version or another since November.

Here's to hoping they clear this latest round fast. If those nodes get bigger, we'll be back in to see the doc.

I'm right there with you sister!

School is the worst! My oldest never got sick... but when he did it was something he got at school. My granddaughter started school in the fall..... I think they have all been sick every since!

Weather has been nasty here. Today I learned that "freezing rain" is a literal statement. There is a quarter inch of ice everywhere. I have never had to chip ice off of my car in order to get into it. :duc

I swear growing up in Iowa, that we lived on the Ice beltway.  Just about every year sometime between Halloween and Thansgiving we'd get iced.  I remember one year we were out of school 2 weeks due to the ice.  It coated my car literally 2 inches thick, took down powerlines all over, we ran on a generator for 2 weeks.  I used a screwdriver to chip out the door, got the car started, cranked up the heat, and let'er sit running (made sure tail pipe was chipped free).  I chipped along both sides and eventually was able to push the entire sheet off as a solid sheet of ice.  Massive crash when it went sliding off to the ground.  The ice was amazingly pretty, but amazingly destructive that year.  The whole farm was a skating rink for quite some time.

I just want to put this out there.  I announced last night I am getting a trio of Cream Legbars from GFF newest line.  Absolutely beautiful birds and crests to die for.  They should be around 6 weeks old.  If I owe you CCL eggs and you wish to wait for the new birds to be laying, please let me know.  It probably won't be until Summer.  If you do not know what the new line looks like check out the auction on RBA.  They have 2 of their hens up on auction.

This also means that once I replace my current rooster with the new one I will most likely no longer have White Legbars hatching!  So white Legbars will continue to hatch until Summer time.

Oooooo, I can go for that, please!  I think I'm waiting on 6 CCL/6 Tolbunts from the NYD caption contest for spring, I'm OK to wait a little longer for those beauties...

OMG! That is insane! We've never seen it here. It has been quite the conversation for everyone here.

Hatched out a really pretty silkie chick yesterday...oh em gee...massive mighty mouth on that sucker. It's got the loudest voice I've ever heard, the others are staring at it like it's from Mars. Thing has got to be a cockerel. Always seems like the boys have the mouths, at least in my household. ;)

So sorry about the sick kiddos, I feel that is the hardest time to be a parent. I always worry and end up moody from the nerves of it. Hugs to you.

Ok. I'm an addict. I am no longer in denial. 105 chicks in my brooders from Ideal today. Ok, those are not all mine.

I have hatched out 10 chicks today, few more to go. Donna's wh/bw/lav amd going into lockdown tonight. Have some more going into lockdown on the 8th, 10th.... you get the idea.

Oh, and DH said yes to the yorkie!! So I am trading some chickens for that.... does that count???? And the 105 are bantams, so really is that like 50? Or maybe even 25?? Only 1/3 of them are mine anyway.

She's in denial about being in denial.

Yea - I think they are implying that she is the Queen of De Nile

OMGoodness, I have been

on these comments and the others on chicken math!!! TOO FUNNY!!!

Ok... >500 posts when I checked today, yikes!! Had to skip pages again... here goes my attempt at commenting...

Fodder is a great way to supplement the chickens diet, especially in places like here where snow covers the ground from December to February, usually, I can give my birds some hay from time to time, but it's not as nutritious...

I collected some of my eggs in the first cold snap we had (average temp 5 degrees), had to kind of stalk the nest boxes for the hens laying, or the eggs would freeze quickly, I set 12 eggs and have 4 in lockdown now, I'm pretty sure the ones that didn't develop were shocked from the cold, because my roo in that pen has been pretty reliable, and when I opened them, they looked to be fertile, they just didn't develop...

So sorry to hear about your MIL CPL, hope she is ok, eager to hear an update, and sorry for all of you dealing with sick kiddos or are yourselves sick, I have had a cold 3 times since November, it is driving me crazy, I have been ODing on Vit C and Echinacea, lol because I will NOT get sick again!!

The cold temps are definitely brutal, we've had that here the past couple of weeks, it was actually a heat wave here today, to 34 degrees!! first time since after Thanksgiving, could actually go out without a coat, lol..

Interesting that your bird had Mareks, AyeUp... doesn't Mareks generally come with weakness/paralysis on one side?? Did your bird do that? Read on a thread about a breeder who had Mareks and just let her birds get immunity to it over the years, now no birds in the flock have signs of it and are all healthy, an interesting take on. bio-security

Already have incubating withdrawal... have eggs in lockdown, but it's been sooo cold and the girls are consequently not laying well, as soon as they resume and the eggs don't freeze upon being laid, I will collect and set some more, then hopefully by the time those hatch I can start claiming my spring swaps, Hopefully being the key phrase!!
