so how do talk keep you're chicks identified when putting all breeds together? i've got bands but don't like using till they are older...can food coloring bee used on their down without hurting them? prob stupid question

I've done that. Had pure CM and CM mixed-breeds in the same brooder, so put a spot of food coloring in the white spot on their heads to tell 'em apart :-)

DMRippy has an awesome method of separation in her hatcher but it probably wouldn't work well if you have a styrofoam or smaller incubator. I'm sure there is some solution for dividers that has to be out there.

These ones didn't actually hatch together -- the pure bloods were purchased as day-olds. Food coloring on the two pure bloods for the first two weeks (blue since they were blue-bloods

) then banded them :-) I love the little plastic hatching boxes Donna has!

If her MIL is capable, gether up and moving as much as possible, and keep up with DEEP breaths every hour. It sounds stupid when you're in the hospital, but it helps your lungs a LOT. Get a fever or something not lung related that knocks you down for a day and you'll notice the effect laying around has on your lungs, even if you're otherwise very healthy. Hopefully they can pull her out of "hospice".

Hey everyone, just thought you'd like an update:

Rachael just told me her MIL now has pneumonia and is being sent home Monday under hospice.

So so sorry............

she recovers at home

So my chief of police stopped by today to talk to me. (nice guy I have met a few times) He just wanted to let me know my neighbors are very upset by my ducks. No one has ever said anything to me. Anyway he wanted me to know they are working on writing an ordinance against ducks and exoctic animals in town. He was very nice about it and wanted to give me a heads up and let me know I could come to a meeting and address it as well. I have 16 ducks right now and am trying to sell 8. (I have someoone coming next week to buy at least 6 of them) I have not decided if I want to fight to keep them or not yet. Something to think about. Anyway there don't seem to be any issues with my chickens and if there were I would fight for sure. They might get upset when I finish set up my new pens come spring!
Thats awful your neighbors couldnt just come talk to you.

I am hoping to ship your combined box Monday or Tuesday since temps look to be good this next week.

I have considered this, but I have weak hands due to a health issue. How much hand strength is needed to punch day-olds? If I can't punch quick and clean, it would cause undo pain and distress.
