LOL! Oh gosh -- yeah, guys, it's not like she has two hundred gorgeous cockatoos just randomly kicking around. We just fell in love, and CPL gave us her blessing He's a riot! He's more of an attention hound than my cats. If anyone ever thinks they want a cockatoo or other large parrot, PLEASE research what you're getting yourself into first. You're basically signing on for 40+ years with a very active, inquisitive, easily bored toddler.

I had wanted a cockatoo for so long and then got the chance to babysit my friend's bird for a long weekend. The bird was absolutely wonderful but you are so right about dealing with a toddler. The 4 days was enough for me to change my mind about wanting one. Every time I left his sight he would scream. We live on 10 acres and the sound would echo through the woods at night. It got so bad that my neighbor actually called me and asked if everything was alright. She thought someone was getting beat up...lol.

I think Celtic Oaks said something about these being a specific type of duck that is hard to hatch anyway. I think that's why yours didn't hatch. I was just giving advice so that people don't think all duck hatches are bad.

Oh, I know, just wanted to provide more information on my particular hatch. Have never tried other types of ducks, so can't input on that, but yes have heard Calls and Muscovys are particularly problematic.

I have had issues with Muscovy eggs but my crested crosses multiply like rabbits when I set their eggs. The only time I have problems is if they get the double crested gene.

LOL! Not yet We'll call this story "Your first mission, should you choose to accept it..."

So here I am, just pulled into CPL's driveway practically, and Rachael is like "Okay, I need you to do something." Which is what I went over there for -- she's juggling a lot right now and I could tell she was getting a little stressed and behind on stuff (no wonder!). So of course I said "Okay" and she hands me a plastic bag containing zip ties and wire cutters and says "Here's your tools. Go out to the front coop. You'll see the problem."

Well, the problem is a poor little Russian Orloff who apparently wasn't smart enough to go in out of the cold one night and froze in the pen, poor thing. The challenge is that CPL's front coops and pens rival Fort Knox. So my mission was to extricate said poor little frozen Orloff from what is essentially a hermetically-sealed, impenetrable fortress, preferably without dismantling the entire thing, lol! I had to sit there and look at it for a while before figuring out how to gain access without absolutely tearing the pen to pieces, extricate the expired Orloff, and seal it back up again.

Yeah, Rachael? Next time just install retinal scans and passcodes -- it'll be easier

I'm bummed, though -- one thing I didn't get to was learning how to give serama manicures!

When I was a kid I saw a myna bird for sale at an amish food market of some sort. He/she was all black and to my young eyes was like an irridescent talking crow. I fell in love with it it and pestered my mom for years about getting one (way expensive, out of reach for a kid who only earned 10 cents a week allowance)

parrots are cool, too. but now I have chickens. but they cant talk.

Oh no!!! We put pots in the oven to store them and I've forgotten before, but thankfully, a pot doesn't melt. I bet that was a disaster.

Chickens are restful. Cockatoos, not so much

Taking care of 50+ chickens a day doesn't take half the time he's gonna! But he's a delight Once we get him a proper play area and onto a regular schedule, he'll do great. This morning he was colossally clingy and just wanted attention-attention-attention till he was a little worn out and overstimulated and getting cranky (overtired toddler, anyone?) Now he's having nap time very happily with an apple slice and some peanuts.

I have only hatched ducks once, and they were runner ducks, which may be easier than the others. I did read a lot of posts on BYC about it. I had 11 of 12 eggs hatch. If I remember right, I incubated at 45-50% humidity and then went to 80% at lockdown - the highest my Brinsea humidity pump would go. Each day I took the lid off the incubator for a cool down for about 10 minutes (good time to candle!). Before I put the lid back on, I misted them with water. My Brinsea is back up to temp within 5-10 minutes, so I'm not sure how well it would work in a different type of incubator.
