I need brooder ideas!!! I'm out of brooder space and I have more chicks hatching in a week. Building is not an option since my skills stink. Last time I used my DH's circular saw, I almost cut the cord off. And i have no way of hauling lumber. I was looking at a live stock tub but heck, I have no way of getting it home. I only have my jeep. So I need help!

What type of pens do you have outside? How big of a brooder do you need?

I modified one of my pens to be a brooder and have never been happier. I have NO chicks in the house and EVERYONE is outside as soon as they leave the hatcher. Its heavenly.

Cardboard boxes!! Lightweight, cheap free, you can flatten them to haul easily, you can put them together to make whatever size/shape you need, disposable when done....the list goes on.

the big plastic totes seem to work pretty well for me and easy to clean

I won't have a pen available until mid March

On the other hand, if you DID build, I'm building one today for this weekend's hatch. I'll post pictures later -- it's a fabulous idea and keeps them nice and toasty warm even in freezing, nasty temps :) Pics later!

Cardboard boxes work great, I agree! I am using one now that a bathroom vanity arrived in that I turned on its side and added onto the end and duct taped up since my big wooden one is full of month olds that aren't quite feathered enough to go outside yet. The hatchlings from this coming up weekend will go into it as well, since they're only a week or so apart and it's plenty big. Just hope we don't lose power this weekend. I'd hate to lose these chicks after lockdown..

Plastic tubs work great as well, if you have one or can get one from a big box store. Have one of those that we customized by cutting out the front panel and putting in some screen so they can see out.
