Alex, I forgot about your Splash Marans! That might be the ticket! They should have somewhat darker eggs than the cuckoos, too, shouldn't they? Oh, and the Whitmore birds won't be here until some time in March, so you have time to build another pen! Besides, I want to hold them until we can sex them, so we each get what we want.

Filumene, I would love to see some pics of those Black English Orps particularly! I've got some good quality BBS eggs ordered, and black from a different bloodline would be perfect!

They lay a decently dark egg. The ones in the grow out pen will lay a darker egg than the ones I have now. They seem lighter the day they are laid then get darker as they sit in the bator or on the counter....weird.

I'll probably take a few to add to my layer flock and might grab a splash rooster if you get one!

Great find and a very good price. These are what I brood mine in as well. They are ideal. Hubby built some nice hinged tops for me.

Bummer on chick losses

and madamwlf, sorry you missed your partridge barties, but I'm sure you'll get some soon! In the meantime, yep, those black beauties are STUNNING.

I'm up to 16 chickies in the incubator with about another 30 eggs to go at 24 hours since first pip. So far, so good -- although I'm realizing I really do need a hatching 'bator. It's not space or mess so much as the fact that the airflow in the fridge is high enough I think I'm shrink-wrapping some eggs without even opening the 'bator. It has to be high to keep temps stable over that big a space, but the air movement is enough to dry things out even at 60-70% humidity. Those membranes turn to glue the second they start drying at all, and if a chick pips a decent-sized hole but doesn't zip almost immediately, they're having real problems. So I'm thinking a still-air hatcher for lockdown to solve that issue.

On the other hand, drowning a chick in the egg due to insufficient evaporation is never gonna be a problem

Its going to be a while before I can get to WCA. At least 3-4 weeks. FT job plus PT job plus school 2 days a week....UGH
