They are good. DH will be living at the farm in the Spring with FIL while they put the crop out, so I will be unsupervised all Spring. Lol

OK you asked for it.... here it is. This is the gear box off the Showtime Rotissire . This is NOT the motor. It would not be strong enough to turn 540 eggs.

It has a set of teeth on the top and bottom. the bottom teeth are helical cut... there is a gear on the motor that fits those teeth. I could change that if I had other options.

just a view inside to see how it works. It slows the motor down and then the BIG gear in the incubator slows it down more.

I am OPEN to any fixes. The motor runs too fast... I think it would sling the eggs out. It needs to slow down by about half. We just don't understand how to gear it down well enough to redo this. We have toyed with the idea of a PWM. But have not figured that out yet.

BTW there are pics of my bator here
Hmmm... interesting puzzle. So the two issues are: the white multi-gear is stripped and the motor runs too fast.
I've seen very similar gears on printers that I used to repair: http://www.satoamerica.com/. In fact, I used to have a drawer full of 'em. Unfortunately, I changed jobs recently.
I'll look on the Sato parts page & see if I can find something.

The only two ways I can think of to deal with the motor running too fast is to slow down the motor itself, if possible. Or to enlarge the gears. It's a gear ratio thing. I've seen it done, but don't know how myself. I know a genius printer tech who might be able to figure it out - I'll ask him.
Is there a way to adjust the motor speed? Oh, and what's a PWM?

ETA: Ooh, I googled PWM & figured it out: http://www.dprg.org/tutorials/2005-11a/index.html
I'm allergic to electricity, so I've never tried something like this...

PMW= Pulse width modulation????? It basically is a on off timer that works really fast. Kinda like a dimmer switch (they don't work BTW) It will pulse on an off anywhere from 10% on to 90% on. The motor is wirred odd..... My son says it is like a 3 phase motor almost. So it needs ALL the electricity to work so that is why a dimmer will not work.

I had not thought about a printer..... hum. I have 2 printers that are broken. We are going to frankenstien them together to make one printer. I might have to take a closer look. The biggest problem is it is plastic..... really it is not strong enough to handle all the weight of the eggs. I need to use all metal gears. We have thought about a microwave...... but those are plastic too.... might be a harder plastic. I don't have one of those to look at either. A VCR has lots of gears, but plastic..... and we gave all ours away right before I started building the bator

I too don't understand gear ratio thing either. Nor do I know where to find some small metal gears to play with.

I have not contacted Ronco. I am sure they would sell me the WHOLE thing. I already bought that for cheaper

OK, I am pretty sure I am going to have to cull one of my remaining 2 wheaten ams chicks. Ugh! I REALLY wanted them! Why does that always happen to the ones you want the most?

I lost my last two remaining little NJ roos. Now I will have to raise more..... My new Spangle OEGB rooster did not make it either.(The hens hated him and I really think they KILLED him) Now I am on another search. I would like Spangle and Mille Fleur eggs/hens/roosters if anyone knows of any...My two Australorp roosters decided to have it out after a year together. I had to split them up and clean them up. They were a bloody mess. Guess one will have to go. I am super attached to both. They come to me for treats and pets every morning. Can't get my thoughts straight this morning. Babymakes6 - please forgive me the multiple PM's. I sent before reading all the post.

Hope everyone else has a great day - The way mine has started, I may need to go back home and start over

smaller gears allow faster turn speeds, Enlarging the gear causes fewer rotations and thus slowing it all down. Robot kit websites would have all sizes and types of gears. Our son competes on his high schools robot team so we have parts laying around often. You might find more solid gear parts looking at the robot parts.

Broken microwaves that have the bottoms that spin will have good gears inside of them too. Look at grill rotisseries too and see what those gears look like.

Hubby just walked in before I posted.............he says a small gear driving a large gear results in slower speed.

So sorry. That is terrible. Someone, I think Gabblebabble has a Spangled pair on her pages. Says they are pending sale, but she might have eggs.

OK, all, I have a stupid question so don't laugh. I have never show so am not up on terminology for colors. The Birchen Marans that hatched from crfarms mainly hatched out as splash or blues. I need to sell some extra roos. What do I call their color? Are they the same as regular Splash Marans or Blue Marans, or do they have some special designation since they came from Birchen base coloring?

TIA
