Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

So, my incubator that I am using right now, I think I am going to convert it to a hatcher...it is proving to be difficult to maintain temp in although is working ok. Any recommendations on an incubator that has a digital thermostat that is relatively inexpensive? Also, I bought an egg turner with my current one, are those interchangeable? Seems like all the foam bators are the same size and the turners all hold the same number of eggs...

Hey guys i got some brown eggs ing the mail and i am clueless as to what they are and who shipped them. Bryan Bradsaw in Oklahoma? Who are you and what are they?

Rant time.

I was supposed to start tutoring a student today at 11:00 at our public library. He told me he had a Saturday In School Suspension and wouldn't be here until 11:10. Its about 11:30 now. How long do I wait for him?

Myself, I would not wait any longer. I could understand pushing the session back a 10 or 15 mins due to the SISS, but would draw the line there. If the kid can't appreciate that your time is valuable, well, that's his loss.

Well,I now have a broody duck. With a bunch of duck eggs under her. BUT the last time I checked, my boy was not getting the job done. I do have some younger silver appleyards that could possibly have fertilized them. But doubtful. I guess I could sneak some chicken eggs under her. Now I wish I had some more duck or turkey eggs.

I dunno. Susan mentioned it sound like someone from here, with the type of birds being offered... But I have never seen anyone offer lavender laced astralops. I think I might have to look into those!
If its real, I don't really see a problem

they wouldn't be making much profit after the swap, and hatch rate from shipped eggs. So they could be giving people in that area a chance to get fancy rare breeds for a decent price, just as all you amazing people have done on this swap.

Anyway. I am waiting on a customer to buy some BCM chicks... Then Saturday I have someone buying my columbian Cochins (

too bad, but having a breeding pair is taking up a whole pen that I could be using for a quad or
More) plus, my birchen rooster attacked te columbian roo the moment I tried to let him free range) they should be sold next Saturday, and I will almost be at my goal for buying someone's BCM quad

I decided it is worth the investment and simply can not wait!
Hi All!

Actually, the mystery Craigslist poster is me! You are right, Sah, I am only doing because this because unique breeds are just not available in MN. And good stock is even tougher. A X Silkie for $10 is about as exotic as you get in MPLS and I want to help new chicken owners learn about saving and preserving the heritage breeds. Besides, I live in the city. If I can't keep them all, I can at least peddle them.

Every spring, I work with about 100 metro and Suburban families and 3 or 4 schools to start up Urban Chicken Coops. I run free day-long workshops about city chicken keeping, we build a varitey of chicken tractors and help them acquire healthy chickens. It is my way of community building.

What happens with most of these families is that they order the "small city" kind of packages from the hatchery and all of their chickens die or are sick. You really can't send 3 hatchery chicks to MN in March priority mail and think they will live! I decided a couple of years ago that we could do better, so I have been working on helping people with this since. I am super excited this year to be able to move away from the hatchery stock that I have been getting in years past to hatching good quality birds. But, it is more risk for me.

As far as profit, I don't make any. Most years, I break even. I give a ton of chicks away to families that I just want to get addicted. I just promised 3 of Flocksalot Midgets to the cutest kid in the neighborhood for Easter because he fell so in love with my turkeys and his mom doesn't have the money and I always give birds free to schools and to my students. BTW: A photograher contacted me about borrowing some chicks for an easter shoot, I agreed if I could have rights to the pics. Some of your chicks will be art!! I will try to share them.

I have had several contact me about eggs and I give them whatever you send me for $18 which is about what it costs for either PP or shipping. I also pass along any extras to the 4H kids. I charge more for the chicks because it cost me to lose so many in shipping and hatching. Also, because those who can pay for the chicks help pay for the ones I give away. It is a wonderful way of paying for both my hobbies, chickens and wine making.

I guess I really didn't think about you guys not liking this use of the swap. I am interested in your opinion on it. I am not sure who "he who shan't be named" is, but I can promise that I am true to my word and honest in my intentions. If this use feels like an exploitation of your objectives on the swap, I can rethink this years plan to be a bird peddler and go back to ordering hatchery stock. IDK: Opinions?
