let's face it, about the only thing NOT encouraged on this thread is unplugging your 'bator

Lol! Well, I'm trying to quit for a bit. I have 15 swaps coming to me still, that I can remember! That's 117 eggs, NOT counting any extras sent, lol. That's almost two full trays in the bator. Of course, they'll slowly roll in, so I'll have plenty of space.

Yeah... well, my bator was supposed to be empty after today, then turned off for a week for upgrading and cleaning when we moved. In all reality, I have your last shipment in a friend's bator at my new house and will be moving 15 more eggs over, then rushing around to upgrade, clean and move the cabinet to accept three or four or maybe even five more packages of eggs, LOL! So much for not having any eggs for a week!!!

I just candled for the first time. Some were definitely veiny, some, I wasn't sure. One had a definite blood ring and three others I believed were quitters. Since this is a learning experience for me, what to look for and so forth, I did an eggtopsie on the four that I pulled. All four had some development,, so yes I can tell a fertile egg. The blood ring was very obvious and definitely a quitter (that's a bacterial infection, right?) two had started, but were shriveled up and undeveloped. One, I was mistaken. It was still viable and a lot larger than the other three. I was going to examine it closer, but DH added it to the compost before I could. I was pretty sure about all four of them, so I am glad that I put all the questionable ones back.

I was half expecting all of them to be dead as my incubator spiked to 102 at one point. Fortunately, we caught it within five minutes of it happening and were able to get it down to normal relatively quickly. I hope the rest are developing normally. I will wait until next week to try again (day 14). Part of me is a bit sad that I misjudged the one, it makes me feel like maybe I shouldn't pull eggs.

My questions:
when do you pull eggs? The blood ring was really easy to see, too bad it was the only white egg I set :/
Shoul I wait longer before pulling?
What is the risk in waiting?
Will they explode?
I have read that you should not wash eggs, the white one, aka blood ring, was very dirty. If I see this again, should I wash it off? How? Is it worse to wash it?
How do you keep incubator temps up when candling?

That is all for now. Thank you for any help you can offer.

when do you pull eggs? sometime between day 10-14 depends on what else is going on

Shoul I wait longer before pulling? personal choice on this one, pulling too early can lead to pitching good eggs

What is the risk in waiting? no risk if you monitor your eggs and do routine checks. Day 6/7, Day 10/14 and lockdown (unless you are talking goose or duck)

Will they explode? they can, but again if you monitor your eggs you will know long before they get to stink bomb

I have read that you should not wash eggs, the white one, aka blood ring, was very dirty. If I see this again, should I wash it off? How? Is it worse to wash it? some wash, we dont. We deal with duck eggs all the time with mud, a light brushing off is all they ever get. Perfectly clean duck eggs are nice, but they tend to get mud on them more often than not

How do you keep incubator temps up when candling? open cabinet door, remove eggs for inspection, candle, dump bad eggs, place eggs back in cabinet.
