I
I just candled for the first time. Some were definitely veiny, some, I wasn't sure. One had a definite blood ring and three others I believed were quitters. Since this is a learning experience for me, what to look for and so forth, I did an eggtopsie on the four that I pulled. All four had some development,, so yes I can tell a fertile egg. The blood ring was very obvious and definitely a quitter (that's a bacterial infection, right?) two had started, but were shriveled up and undeveloped. One, I was mistaken. It was still viable and a lot larger than the other three. I was going to examine it closer, but DH added it to the compost before I could. I was pretty sure about all four of them, so I am glad that I put all the questionable ones back.

I was half expecting all of them to be dead as my incubator spiked to 102 at one point. Fortunately, we caught it within five minutes of it happening and were able to get it down to normal relatively quickly. I hope the rest are developing normally. I will wait until next week to try again (day 14). Part of me is a bit sad that I misjudged the one, it makes me feel like maybe I shouldn't pull eggs.

My questions:
when do you pull eggs? The blood ring was really easy to see, too bad it was the only white egg I set :/
Shoul I wait longer before pulling?
What is the risk in waiting?
Will they explode?
I have read that you should not wash eggs, the white one, aka blood ring, was very dirty. If I see this again, should I wash it off? How? Is it worse to wash it?
How do you keep incubator temps up when candling?

That is all for now. Thank you for any help you can offer.

I pull eggs just before lockdown if I need room. Otherwise I wait until the hatch is done. Never had a 23 day old egg explode on me.

Make sure when you are candling that you aren't over handling the eggs. Oils and bacteria from our hands can interfere with development.

I think you have learnt an awful lot already and are doing extremely well. Give yourself an attagirl!

But, that's what you have?! My royal palm boy is a blue carrier! I've been gobbling up your eggs to get him some lady friends and hope to get blues from them eventually.
well I guess, out of her eggs, they will be blue palm or at least carry the blue gene....lol, no one else will get those eggs when she starts laying...I can smell it! lol

So, she's a blue palm and he's a blue palm?! I'm sorry, I think I'm in shock or denial or something. Well, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.... I say that sarcastically, because now I'll have to REALLY stalk you and set up a couch and tv in the turkey hut, since that's where I'll be sleeping!!
