Okay, need quick advice. 20 or so 10 week olds, just put them outside today. In the 20s tonight, 30s tomorrow but suppose to start getting in 40s during the day and 30s at night. They've been without heat in our basement for a few weeks now. They are in a large wooden doghouse, completely draft free. Eaves are open for ventilation but hard wired. Heat lamp or let them tough it out? They are feathered. Need opinions quickly since it is getting dark.
ya cant blame a guy for tryingNo, the SFH have been doing fine. If only I could get them to up the production to match the demand.
However, I do also have some BBS Orps that started laying this week that I need to fertility check also. I have chicks running around from that coop, but these are new layers and I want to make sure the roo is getting to ALL the girls.![]()

Dang, if I could find someone to feed cats and chickens, I'd hitch a ride to Richmond with you and visit my boy!
I'd love to! I'd be leaving day-old baby chicks home alone but I haven't seen my boy in forever!I'll have room! I have a friend coming to feed for me once a day. I think she is going to brood chicks at her house.
I have brooder spaceI am finally done. 3 brooders and 1 coop/pen cleaned out. 4 groups of chicks moved. After next week's hatch, I will be officially out of brooder space. I need Spring!!!!
Looks like I am definitely in the minority on this. I tend to brood mine much cooler than recommendations and give them much more area to stay cool. I have had my NYDhatch chicks outside without heat since 5 weeks of age. By the way, if anyone needs a Birchen Marans splash or blue cockerel, I have several available. LOL Craigslist is fixing to become a firm friend of mine.Heat lamp. Better safe than sorry!
