Hubby and I went to the auction last night and came home with a dozen black Sumatra eggs, 1/2 dozen blue/black Cochin eggs, a pretty little Serama roo, and an adorable mottled frizzle Cochin Bantam roo...all from Villamil Farms here in Oklahoma and.....all those durned coturnix quail eggs (over 100) hubby wanted

Are they actually good for anything? I have to do some egg switching and break out the inkie I was keeping for hatching, just to accommodate the quail eggs...

and had to ask some people that were sending eggs if they were willing to wait...ugh!

Quail are great. From being an egg to laying an egg in about 8 weeks. They take up small amounts of space and have better feed to egg conversion then chickens. You really need to make sure they have spaces to hide can get away from each other and do not have too many box for happy quail. Happy quail are a joy. Unhappy quail are nasty carnivores.

Any updates on the Easter swap? Shipping deadlines are fast approaching....

The easter swap is not associated with this threat directly, as on that thread for a better resp once. Jim said last I checked he was waiting for some reply from someone.

None of you lovely ladies I pal around with here are Cheryl Cohen, are you? I didn't think so, but wasn't sure. Apparently she and I want the same batch of eggs on another site.

Cheryl Cohen is omelette ranch. She doesn't swap but she is a lovely person who knows a ton about chicken and had some amazing breeds but s semi retired for a year or so. I just hatched of some mille four leghorns and jubilee orphs from her.

Thanks guys! I just got 10 in the mail to try them out. I start brooder babies out on 8oz water bottles, but it doesn't take long for them to outgrow them! The ducks outside, the main reason we hate them now is because of the water mess they make when everyone had to be locked up, so we want them back on a closed water system. With 10 nippers, I can make a big brooder waterer and have some for everyone in the big flock. I'll have to get an order of 50 or so for all the breeder pens though once they grow out. I'm so excited! No more stanky duck bedding!

We are swapping over to them too for the chickens, actually mu bucket is sitting here I need to install the nipples into for the EE flock. Cant use them for the ducks and geese, but have auto fountain bowls for them.

off to bed, up and moving early tomorrow to go pick up the new incubator and see a few BYC chicken crazy people. We have an extra gander/goose pair from the sebbie hatch this week I havent even begun to look at the waiting list to place. I think they are the only available birds on property we arent hauling with us tomorrow lol

Does anyone use chicken nipples? Do you have to use a closed system? Like, can you just use a bucket without a lid? Or if you get extravagant and do a little plumbing system and have a big rain barrel, does it have to be air tight?

I don't think anything I use is air tight. I use Nestle Quick plastic container and 3 gal buckets but the lids are never tight. You might want a lid for other reasons. We forgot to put the top on one and found a drown keet in it. They will also try to roost on the top and would poop in the water AND it will keep debris out that could stop up the nipples.

Have you ever tried a nipple type device with ducks? Everyone says they have to submerge their nostrils, but I've never had a problem with brooder ducks. I imagine if they're out burying their snoots in dirt, they'd need to clean them out, but for just days of shake down, they'd be fine.

Rules: All members of the Swap thread are allowed to participate. In order to offer Spring or later eggs, you must be on the completely unrestricted list. Walli can post a list of all participants that are unrestricted. If you wish to be a main offerer please PM me and put Easter Swap in the subject line. Sign ups will end on March 23, 2013. This will not be a free for all. Names of individuals who signed up to offer will be drawn at random. If you are not on when your name is drawn then you will be skipped. If we have time at the end we will pick someone at random to put an offer up. Any good standing participant of the swap can try to claim an offer. I don't know how much I'm willing to bid on Spitz eggs. She may end up with them. The man listing them said it ends at 7 tomorrow, but he didn't specify am or pm...so who knows.
