ooooooh just learned something via craigslist...........

rare only a handful in the USA, blue merin chickens (you know the ones with feathered legs and chocolate eggs)

and here I shipped a hen to resse awhile back lol
I bought some Marans eggs locally, and the lady kept telling me that they are the most rare breed of chickens in the US. Went on explaining that the black copper were the most rare followed by blue, splash, and golden cuckoo. I just said ok and went on. I wish I would have saw the red flags, now I have 4 infertile light colored Marans eggs out of the 6 I purchased.

Wonder if those come from the same rare fowl breeder as those "Rossenburge Inland Rockies" (RIR)

I've seen marans spelled numerous ways. I don't mean to sound judemental, but typically, I won't buy from someone who can't spell the breed name properly. When I'm posting here, I'm sure I mess up words, but if I'm doing an advertisement or I'm trying to post something edumacational, I'll look it up in thedictionary if I'm not sure. I used to be a champ at grammar and spelling, but these electronic devices have ruined that, lol. As a kid, I used to read dictionaries and thesarauses (see, I think I spelled that wrong, LOL), for fun. Used to get made fun of for it, but I enjoyed it. Novels end, those things were basically unlimited.

I had to share this story, I was talking to my neighbor the other day and he asked if my chickens were laying yet. I told him none were old enough yet, but my duck should start laying anytime. His response "Ducks lay eggs!?" I said yes, he asked if you could eat them. I did not laugh. I really wanted to but managed not to. I mean most people do know birds lay eggs right?

Morning all!

Chicks, but I'll ask him about eggs. He has been breeding them for a while now. Along with Buff Leghorns, which are very nice btw. I'd be happy to run eggs down for you. I'll PM you when I ask him. Oh and all you might need is the shipping cost. He has been after me for eggs from my Husbands game birds, so I'll swap for them, if he is agreeable to it.

Me too! Can I get in on this?

Ditto. I'm sure I make mistakes when I'm just gabbing, but when I'm selling something, I make sure my spelling and grammar good. I don't even consider buying birds/eggs if the breed info is wrong or there's spelling errors, or (my own pet peeve) the ad uses text slang. U for You, etc. Drives me bonkers!

When I fed the birds yesterday I caught my November hatched roo trying to court his hatch mate. They're 16 weeks and she's and SBEL, hoping for pullet eggs soon.

I had a really good hatch yesterday. Lots of silver penciled rocks, silkies, showgirls, marans, and a couple of wheatons. Now my question is this... I had 5 eggs that did not pip at all. The scientist in me was forced to crack them open and see if I could tell where they went wrong. Every one of the 5 had pipped upwards towards the air sac but had not turned their heads to pip through the shell. Shipping issue? I don't know what I could have done to prevent it. Any ideas from anyone?
