I don't know for sure about the California grays, but you might want to check and see if the roos are double barred. If so they would pass the barring to 100% of the chicks. The California whites are a cross and I think the roos only have 1 copy of the barring gene so they will not breed true, but I don't care I want barred EE LOL.

Here's what Ideal's website says about them:

"Production Blacks were developed by Ideal Poultry in the early 1960's. They are a combination of several breeds but are basically a black, silver barred plumage bird, which has a plumage color pattern similar to Barred Plymouth Rocks. This breed is the most efficient white egg producer of the breeds and varieties that are not primarily white. They breed true; however, they have not been recognized as a pure breed by the American Standard of Perfection."

If you put your CCL roo over a couple of the production blacks, that would give barred SBELs. Then you'd have to send me eggs.

I think the CCL lay way better than the AM and bigger eggs for the most part.... I didn't think of that. I can cross the CCL roo with my CA Whites and get SBEL with straight combs, barred and crests HEHE. GREAT IDEA!!!!! Keep any eye out.... in 6 months LOL

On those sideways packed eggs that arrived pre=scrambled. I had a box of pretty expensive eggs (and lots of them) arrive like that recently, minus the broken part. All but 3 are developing so sideways isnt always bad. However giving no padding is very bad. I had a swap box of eggs arrive with two sets of 6 in it, 4 of one set of six were busted, egg everywhere including over the remaining eggs. 2 other eggs were cracked. Wiped the whole ones off and set them. Nothing, nada zilch even developed. Next time I wont wast bator space on eggs that were covered in egg goo from eggs breaking during shipping.

Yesterday we got up to 70 something. Today we are getting snow....what is wrong with Mother Nature?!?! I had three customers call yesterday looking for poultry, that normally would not be a problem, but what they want is not laying. I see an egg from a hen one day, then we have a really cold day, then nothing for the rest of the week. Sometimes I think I should get rid of all my rare guys and girls and just keep Orpingtons....


Speaking of shipped eggs... I got a box yesterday that they were all wrapped in bubblewrap, then put into a plastic bag tied off, and finally stuffed with newspaper. They look like someone just stood there and shook them till they scrambled.

My three "not-popular" girls are laying every single day. RIR, BR and a greenleg hatch.
same thing with our weather though. We have a chance of snow Saturday, and the extended forecast for the folllowing Saturday is 70F. Sooo ready for the hot muggy summers. I think I got the very same package also, same wrap, same scramble. Air cells were a mess. Threw out half immediately. The 4 i decided to try sat upright for a day, then I put them in the incubator, not turning, sitting upright. I will look at them tomorrow and either throw them out or start turning with them staying upright.
