If its too late when there is swelling, how do you know when a hen is egg bound?

She was acting fine. Running around the yard and eating/drinking like normal. I read a couple of things to try, like humidifier (aka hot water in a tub) under her, olive oil

I can't lose her!!!!! She's the only one left of my good cochin flock. :cries
Most time, people realize when it is too late. We did. You can try all those and see if it helps.

I lost one of my SS hens recently to being egg bound. We did not cull her, she passed on her own. Afterwards I felt so bad that she basically layed there and suffered to death. I just did not know what was wrong with her.

So I have 2 pullets in my family room right now. 1 is up because she is allergic to the straw I was bedding in and the other was chilled yesterday so go brought in. She was doing great to day so i gave her a bath to wash the fermented feed off. i also decided to bathe my silkie roo who was FILTHY! He is still not white and I gave him 2 baths! Anyway they are all in the box. This is how they are sleeping:

They are making the cutest little chirps!

Thanks for all kind words regarding my cruddy hatch. Aye - I would love a "peep" package. If you've got a spare CL roo, I'd love him.

I did put the little boy down. He wasn't getting any better and his tremors were getting worse. I totally blame this on my incubator - it has a hard time staying stable in lockdown, especially when they start pipping. Last time I was home so I was able to fine tune the temp and humidity, but this time I wasn't home until the end. I'm going to try using my "new" Roll-X has a hatcher. It seems backwards, since it holds twice as many eggs, but if it holds temp and humidity better, than so be it. But that won't be for a awhile, at least until April.

I think the new rules are great! I won''t be swapping for a bit, but I'm all for fine tuning.
I am sorry for your troubles but on one up side one would never learn unless there were a few mistakes right

I only say that because reading what you posted has actually in a way helped me. I just got my incubator and it has been running for a week. I had 2 extra thermometers one digital and one the regular kind. The digital one was way off the incubator one and the regular one was same temp. So at first I thought the digital one was off so I just left it at the same. But when I read your post I checked it with another thermometer and that was yet a different temp. Luckily I don't have any eggs in it quite yet but I have some on the way. I don't have ice so couldn't do the test. I tried it with snow but I want to get some ice and try it again, one thermometer said 31 the other 33. The dig. one was reading 97 when the incubator was at 99.5 so I raised the heat up to 101 and it is now reading 99. My digital one also has a hydrogemeter (SP?) and that too was off from the incubator. The hydrogometer kept being above what the incubator said and was always in different increments. It now is only 1 degree off from the incubator hydrogometer and there is no way to adjust it so not sure what is going on. Iwill go back to the store and see if they have any good thermometers I could try.

So in a way your bad experience may have helped me try to avoid a similar one.

On a much happier note, my White Bresse rooster is crowing!!!!  Wow, does he sound rough too!

Also, I want to start canning this year.  So, can someone tell me exactly what I need to acquire as for as equipment to do this?  I've not started reading up on it yet but I'm already making a list of what I want to can.

I can most of what we eat. If its not canned than its frozen. Tell me what you have plans for and I will tell you what you need.

All fruits and tomatoes are acidic and only need a water bath, but if you make awesome spaghetti sauce like me than a pressure cooker is suggested.

All veggies need pressure cooking. Same with meats, stews, fish, broth, and soups. I love just opening a jar of soup, pint of course, when I'm home by myself.

Hope this helps, but if you need specifics let me know. My pantry is always filled to the brim. I can non stop all year. Soups over the winter or I pull something out of the freezer like blueberries and make pie filling. Keeps me busy, but I love to do it.

I am so proud of myself.  Walked out with no chicks even though they had some nice breeds: tetra tints, SLW, partridge rocks, brown leghorns and Red Cross.  I do get an adorable little Purina Poultry Feed Egg basket for my counter.

We went yesterday to pick up bedding only. Came home with Tettras, Dark Brahmas, and red stars. My excuse was my turkeys were hatching and I needed the chicks to teach them about food and drink. I always got an excuse.
