This morning I candled the Ameraucana eggs Kraftyladies sent me. Seventeen lovely eggs made it through the careful handling of our USPS...and every single one is developing! Wow! Super birds! I will be positive and assume they will all make it to lockdown and hatch!

On today's hatch, there are three chicks out now, and more pipped. Donna's cuckoo marans and Laura's barnevelders! This is going to be a spring and summer filled with beautiful birds!

That is an AWESOME rate for homegrown eggs, let alone shipped ones. WOW!!! Congrats!

Our realtor just called me to let me know that they let a few couples look at the house before market as it doesn't officially go on until Monday and one couple have offered above asking and are paying our closing costs they want the house so badly!!!!!

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy!!!!!

The craziness and hard work has paid off!
Now I can just be at the farm and focus on art and chickens and turkeys!!!!!

I MAY even be able to participate in the backward swap now. I wasn't going to because I didn't want to put up any woodworking offers when I still owe some from previous! So if I can bust them out and get them finished I'll be offering wood goods and eggs for the easter backward swap!!!!!

SOOOOOO relieved! Being a landlord an hour away does not suit us!

He has an IEP, which is a step up from a 504(?), as it was explained to me. My brother-in-law told me that the 504 was more effective so I asked about it. My son's therapist about had a conniption. I am going with 504 because it sounds right. We have an annual meeting to discuss his needs. I also have the right to demand an additional planning meeting should I deem it necessary. He got his first IEP at three, so I did a lot of study at that time about what it meant. Anyway, yes he does

Okay, let me help clarify.  Section 504 was created to protect all students with disabilities that were not severe enough to warrant being covered under the "Special Education" unbrella.  Both are equally effectiveand do similar things--protecting a child's needs.  If a student can be successful in the classroom with little help in accommodations (minor assistance) the child is covered under 504.  Students are placed under the IEP Special Education umbrella if their disability (whether it is health or learning) causes them to need real changes to their learning and work.  For example:  a dyslexic student may just need the opportunity to have some things read to him--this is 504.  Another student's dyslexia may be so severe that he cannot read anything near grade level.  This would fall under the IEP Special Education umbrella because he will need materials on his level, not just read to him here and there. This becomes a modification of his work, and not a simple accommodation to what all other kids are doing.

If the IEP in place is working for your child, leave it.  If changes need to be made or his needs are not being met under that IEP then by law you can request that changes be made to fit the needs of your child.  Both of those plans protect kids with health, physical, mental, and learning disabilities.

He also has and has had difficulties with language. He didn't learn to read and write until he was in fourth grade when it suddenly clicked for him. He is so almost normal, even his special Ed teacher gets frustrated by things that seem like they should be easy but for him are a struggle for example, the incident yesterday was sparked by a writing assignment: describe an event that changed your life, 1.5 pages. He described it in a fragmented sentence and had to spend four periods working on it. He showed me what he had done and had only written three sentences. i spent about twenty minutes discussing different events with him before we could find something that he could expand on. The subject he chose was his parents divorce. His paper went something like this, " a long time ago when I was really young, my parents got a divorce. It was confusing for me." He couldn't verbally give me more than that, so I suggested something closer to home for him, something that actually has some emotion connected to it for him: a change in routine.

The reading issue, we thought might be dyslexia, but it is his general language difficulties. He also didn't speak in full sentences until he was five and that was with coaching. He still has to be encouraged to use full sentences. I was told by one doctor he was retarded, when he was three, because of an IQ test. The strange thing was, that everything they asked him to do was something that he could do or figure out, but they didn't speak his language. As it turns out, he has a high iq, but still struggles with language and other things that have to do with human connection.

My adoptive mother had me on a 504 for LD stemmed from PTSD, and I thought a IEP was a part of 504, but maybe I was just thinking about a general Educational Plan.

That beautiful frizzle cochin bantam I was worried about being egg bound? She laid an egg today
Guess what I was seeing was just her preparing for an egg. It is a normal sized bantam cochin egg... It even has some little speckles that some of my Cochins lay she may be part of my mixed free range flock, but there is no way I am NOT setting that egg!!
So two of my pullets have started laying in the last two days, and three total in the last three weeks e

Well, today has been better. Spoke with my son's teacher and got the skinny on yesterday's incident. Sounds like they get the med issue. Son has DT for the next few days. I panick every time he has an issue like this. When he was younger, I had to move day cares frequently. Each one I would let them know what his issues were and asked if they could handle his disability. Each time they would tell me of course they can and each time, they would give me a moments notice to move him. I kept wondering how you replace a school, lol. All is well now and hopefully will resolve itself. Now that I am aware, I can monitor his medication closer, and the teacher will email me what his homework assignments are.

On the chicken front: I will be driving to Northern Utah tomorrow to pick up some hatchery houdans. So excited to have live chicks, will totally make up for the bad hatch yesterday. The houdans are the breed that my son picked out, so i have been extra motivated to find some, but there are not many of quality out there (U of A lines are the only widely known ones, so really excited to have had the opportunity to swap with caj). Although, I sure hope I can get some of these eggs that I have swapped for to hatch. The hova bator has become my new best friend, it is amazing how easy and well it is working I don't know if the eggs that are in there now are going to make it as I believe they were a victim of Spike (yes I named the evil incubator), but hopefully the future ones will do better.

Question for all you professional hatchets: I have read that 99.5 is ideal temperature, but the hova bator instructions say 100? Which is it?

It can be very difficult to get the help you need for a child in the school system (at least in my area). I'm very happy you were able to explain things to the school and resolve the situation for now.

I find I disclose much more to the people here that I do my face-to-face friends. The people on this forum have friendships that in some ways are more genuine than "real life". Folks here are friendly and understanding, while offline many people don't have time to listen or simply don't care. The people here have generally sought out like minds and are very supportive.

Hi all. All these stories about what is happening in your schools breaks my heart first and inferiorates me second. For those of you who shared about school issues, do you have access to outside advocacy in your state? One of the thingd I do in Minnesota is go with parents to iep meetings and interventions for incidents and advocate for the parents and child. It is ridiculous, but the schools most often take you a lot more seriously. Its like they try to push people around and give you a lot of runaround. Maybe an outside advocate could help?
