There have been people who have had issues with SFH chicks. Lots of speculation on why including that there is something missing in what we give them here that they got naturally in sweden. I have not had any issues with my chicks. I feed a non medicated chick starter and I ferment it. No other vitamins or anything and they stay happy and healthy.

Oh jeeze... Really helpful, huh?
Yup... I wish FedEx would let me ship my birds/egg with them. So much easier, and the DH could make sure they get there in time. (Also a discount...lol)

I have been looking into fermenting. I just need to find a spot to do it in and get my ducks in a row.

Do I detect a wee bit of the Irish in your statement? I don't think I have ever heard soft morning except from people of that region. It is cool here but supposed to warm up. Well, good morning and good bye, all. I'm off to work on my 50th birthday. My son's MRI is also set for this morning. It is either going to be a very good birthday or a very, very bad one. Think positive for me.

Happy Birthday!!!

That the MRI turns out okay.

Question...
Anyone else having a problem with SFH chicks? All the eggs I get hatch, then the chicks slowly get weak. One by one. If I do not put additives in their water they just are lackluster and weak. I am really begining to dislike this breed.

*I am feeding them Puriena Starter/grower with cracked corn and Flockraiser added in. I have been adding booster to their water one week then redcell, then off for a week, then back again.
I have not had any problems with mine. They all seem to be thriving. I don't use medicated starter now, but my first 2 hatches were raised on it. I do add vitamins to their water when they are young, and occasionally add it the adult's water. I do try to give them kefir once in a while. I'm wondering if they need more of the probiotics than other birds?

They would get those from fermented feed as well as kefir or yogurt.

Nope.... those are at the farm

I have done that though. Light marans eggs and really dirty one get eaten.

As for the LAYING pen.... that is another PEN.... They must be productive so they can feed themselves

I have one chicken that positively REFUSES to lay anywhere except the poop tray. Hers would get washed so eaten. and the layer flock would be mixed breeds...not worth incubating. I could send you those to eat!!! LOL

I did wonder about FedEx. They don't allow eggs (or birds) to be shipped? I thought maybe people did not use them because of price when compared to USPS.

we also use non medicated chick feed with nothing else in it but we do use vitamins, have found they do much better that way we do occasionally get a chick that is just not up to snuff, but never multiples.
We also use Unpasteurized apple cider vinegar in all our waterers except when we run out.
