we ferment everything fed here and the results have been a feed bill cut in HALF! Fantastic fertility (no drop from last year at all) and wonderful feathering on everyone and molts recovered from quicker.

Krazy.fermenting is using whole grains or feed with water and acv WITH the mother, let sit for 3-4 days and stir daily to keep mixed well. Once it ferments start feeding. We run 2 sets of buckets for each grain/feed so we always haave one in reserve and ready to feed from as we empty the first bucket.
thanks y'all...guess I am going to have to try this, now to just find ACV with mother in it.....not sure mom will like soaking in a bucket of feed though

It could be the boxes. I have an actual brooder that I use for day old chicks for the first week I can put everything in there except Turkey Poults. For some reason they die if I put them in there. Don't know why but they do. The turkeys do just fine in a tub brooder but not in my actual brooder. Maybe the box has something to do with them.

just for my experience I have found that they need plenty of room and plenty of fresh air, when we first started we used deep plastic totes to brood in and had higher than I like mortality rate, we still use a plastic tote but it is 3 times as big and only about a foot deep, I think it allows more oxygen and room to get away from the heat lamp. After 3-5 days they go to the barn where we have a enclosed room that has 5 small about 20"x24" brooders for 1-3 week old chicks, 2 medium about 24"x48" for young juveniles and 3 soon to be 4 32"x48" for older middle age juvies I found out the hard way no matter how cold the weather is you don't keep the door closed(except at night) the oxygen levels must drop from all those birds, because they keep fresh bedding so it has to be oxygen. Our new system of rotating them is working much better.

Just putting it out there, if anyone has chocolate bantam orps and would like to trade eggs, let me know. My guys are from Jordan Farms and they import their own birds. So my birds are not the same blood line as GFF birds.

Speaking of turkeys, I have 3 out of 4 lilac turkeys from sebrightmom developing. My first turkeys and I am excited. DH not so much. He wants to eat them for Thanksgiving. Fingers crossed that I get them all the way out on or around the 28th.

Brookhavens, I have what looks like 4 developing. For BR these are very hard to candle. 1 was clear and 1 looks like an early quitter, but I kept it in just in case. Way too early to pull. Looking forward to these and will have to get some more GSBR from you and DMRippy.

LAM & TN I set your eggs last night.

Gable, I had two EE hatch yesterday and last night. I was beginning to wonder on one of them. It pipped 2 1/2 days ago. I finally chipped part of the shell and wrapped in damp paper towel because I was afraid it was sticky. Woke up this morning to the fluffiest, puffiest feathered chick ever. Both look like some kind of splash or blue. None of the orps made it, but 2 out of a swap is a good hatch and wonderful birthday item to wake up to. They are both in with my 4 AR Blues that hatched last week. I have chicks everywhere of all ages. I think I have 5 different hatch dates between now and the end of the month. I think I might be overdoing it.

I think that catches me up. Have a great day all.

Question...
Anyone else having a problem with SFH chicks? All the eggs I get hatch, then the chicks slowly get weak. One by one. If I do not put additives in their water they just are lackluster and weak. I am really begining to dislike this breed.

*I am feeding them Puriena Starter/grower with cracked corn and Flockraiser added in. I have been adding booster to their water one week then redcell, then off for a week, then back again.

I have one group of SFHs from KYTinpusher (4 @ 15 wks) and another from BHep (5@ 11.5wks). They have all been extremely healthy and hardy from hatch. I feed an organic milled food that has fishmeal protein in addition to the plant protein. I do not feed medicated, but I do add ACV to the water. I know most commercial feeds are based primarily on plant proteins. Maybe they require more animal protein?

Do I detect a wee bit of the Irish in your statement?  I don't think I have ever heard soft morning except from people of that region.  It is cool here but supposed to warm up.  Well, good morning and good bye, all.  I'm off to work on my 50th birthday.  My son's MRI is also set for this morning.  It is either going to be a very good birthday or a very, very bad one.  Think positive for me.

Happy Birthday, Crystal!

I will be praying for good news for your son!!!
