Caj1985... The eggs you sent were lost for awhile. Well, they just showed up IN TEXAS!!! I'm in Michigan. Why would eggs go from Arkansas to TEXAS before coming to Michigan?

Texas? That is simply nuts unless they are going to fly out of the Dallas airport. Keep me apprised of how they hatch when they finally make it. If you don't get any out, I will send some more the next time I get them.

Oh, and anyone have any brilliant ideas for marking baby chicks I have to make sure I keep them all straight. which is going to take all of my zip ties.... and I like to try to guess the gender based on feathering so I need another system for that. I guess I could cool-aid dye all the chicks I suspect of being girls pink. that would be something, wouldn't it? but would interfere with my enjoyment of them I suspect. and what if I guesses wrong...all the other chicks would make fun.

nose rings? ethnic down braiding? toe nail paint?
I have tried EVERYTHING. I don't like zip ties because if you miss one as they grow it is just NASTY mess to cut out and painful. I use vet wrap to tag their legs. Works pretty well but can come off. Comes in all kinds of colors. I use velcro with pipe cleaners wrapped around the velcro. Don't have any issues with that really.... till they get all muddy

. When all else fails...... I am toe punching now. It is the only thing that is permanate and there are NO MISTAKES. Some of my breeds can be very easily mixed up and I am NOT going to do that again this year. Guessing is not an option this year. I cut the web of their toes with VERY SHARP tiny scissors. I made a chart and made SURE the ones that could be easily mixed up color wise didn't have anywhere near the same markings.

I'm trying to find a good toe punch. Someone posted a pic of a good one along side the cheap one everyone sells not tooooo long ago, but I can't find a source for it. If anyone knows where to get the good one, please let me know! I'm getting too many birds in to keep track of them with less permanent things. The bands come off. The cable ties come off. Paint wears off. Very frustrating.

and of course...I go to look One. More. Time. And find it! http://www.twincitypoultrysupplies.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=8_25They also have one that works like a single paper punch, but I don't have the hand grip for that. This one, I can do!

I have a question on sex-links. I have been reading up on them lately because I am trying to hatch some for a friend. What I have read is that almost any roo (except barred) over barred hens (mine are Barred Rock) will give you sex-links. So DMRippy was nice enough to confirm that my EE roo (Columbian pattern, I think) over my BR would give me sex-links. Those eggs are in the bator now and I am anxiously awaiting that hatch.

Last summer, though, I hatched some BR eggs from the hens that are in with my SFH just to see what I would get. They came out looking very much like SFH, they weren't black and they didn't have spots on their heads even though they were both boys. Why didn't it work? Any ideas?

They are not SOLID Color.... they have another set of genes that make them mottled. They probably do have some barring it is just harder to see.... unless the mottled genes do something to the barring gene.... IDK..... I know only enough to be a MAD CHICKEN SCIENTIST

I've gotten eggs from Arkansas before and they've gone from Little Rock to Grand Rapids airport and then to me. I've never heard of them going all the way to Texas first and it taking 2 days to get there. Weird. According to their expected delivery date, they should have been at my door yesterday, but they just showed up in Texas today. I'll let you know how they do. Fingers crossed that they do well!

Thanks so much, Crystal!

I am going to go to Hobby Lobby, I have a 40% off coupon and get one they use to make jewelry. It will punch through metal so I hope it is sharp. They make them that are really small. I have a leather punch but I can't get that HUGE thing in between the toes without feeling like I might crush a toe. THe scissors are easy and work just fine.... the trick is finding some really sharp on the tip of the blade.

BYE Guys! Must go to the farm and get some projects done FINALLY! And SPRING like weather here too.... 68 I think today..... already 62

Can you explain what toe punching is? Is it permanent?

My eggs are popping! Four out (although one is dragging baggage), and four more pipped. That's already 50%! Fingers crossed for more! (I'm greedy that way!)
