Okay. I was just wondering if your CCL or Bresse were in there. I am trying to get as many auto-sexing chickens as I can and to work up my gull to start butchering chickens. So far, the only one I've butchered I fed to the dogs because I just couldn't bring myself to eat it.

Oh, remember those yellow brahma chicks you said would be the blue columbians??? Nope, they have feathered in completely white. The dirty looking ones are feathering in with the columbian pattern.

Seriously? No columbian patterning on them? I mean, look at Light Sussex, Coronation Sussex, Columbian Wyandotte, Columbian Rock, etc. They all start out white and then develop the black/lavender/blue in their hackles. Weird!
They are pure white. No color at all in them. I'm going to let them grow and see what happens with them.

Hi guys. I just wanted to stop in. I know I seem pretty upbeat on here and honestly it's the one place I feel like I can truly have a little me time. I just want you to know that if I owe you a swap egg or wood/art it's coming. I've been having hard time keeping up. I have a tendency to take too many things on and become overwhelmed. It's like I keep forgetting that I have kids and a small farms as well as normal life. Normally it's not that big of an issue. As most of you know, we've been dealing with the sale of the house we own in Portland. It's been up and down. I don't like airing too many personal woes as this, as silly as it may sound, is sort of my personal sanctuary. Anyway we've had good and bad news with the house and last night we got more bad news. It's not end of the world news but it basically looks like we're going to basically walk away from the house even. Well sort of even. Let's just say the realtors are getting any profit that might be in it. It's sort of heartbreaking on many levels as we put so much time and effort into that place and the people who are buying it have negotiated a steal because we are in a position where we have to close. It's just been a depressing 24 hours for me. Sorry to be Debbie Downer this morning. I just want people to know that I'm not at all flaky and will most definitely be sending the things that I've promised and owe. I'm just not in a mind frame to work on artwork at the moment let alone artwork that involves burning things. This too shall pass and I'll be fine. I'm still just in shock form the last 24 hours.

Ugg. We had to give back our house before we left California... lost all of the profit we had from the previous house. Economy blows.

I find it funny that when I have a chicken-y question, I get more and better responses here than if I search the forums and read the threads or post my own question.

That being said - I have never processed a chicken. I have put down chicks, but never have had to deal with the adults. I'm not squeamish about the killing part, but the defeathering/skinning/bleeding out just seems messy and I'm not set up for it. This summer I am planning on taking a bunch of roos to a processor.

Unfortunately, my EE Rooster is getting more and more aggressive. He's figured out how to get out of the yard and now waits in the front to change at anyone who tries to leave the house. He has to be dealt with. The last straw was this morning when my son went out to feed the dog, and couldn't get past the porch.

I'd like suggestions on the "cleanest" and easiest way to do this, with no special equipment, if possible.

If anyone knows a thread that shows how to do this, without the bickering about what is humane and who his stupid, that would work to.
The thread someone else reccomeded is brilliant, shows the whole process. We use a upended traffic cone with the base and tip cut off for a killing cone, work's great. Be sure the knife is VERY sharp! Put a trashcan under lined with a garbage bag, and when you're done, tie up bag and no mess!
I have never eaten my own chickens (yet) but this year I'm thinking about it. I have 2 roos that I want to process- at what age would you say a rooster is too old? And is it just because the meat is tough? Is there no way to soften the meat for human consumption?

Edited because I can't spell today, lol
I am a huge fan of brining. Helps with tenderizing a lot. Also, let the chicken age for a couple days in the fridge before using/freezing. Helps too. But over a certain age, yeah, stewpot.
are you tallking about the chicken or the husband???!!!???
