Morning all

so thought I was getting over that cold/crud from last week. No go, still sick and very over it.

Woke to a SFH chick out a light brahma working hard at getting out and 3 goose eggs internally pipped so moved them to the hatcher. We have eggs in lockdown all over again, need to cut some coraplast and make drawer dividers for the hatcher today to aid in keeping everyone separate.

WE have that creeping crud too! Omg mine turned into what doc says is walking pneumonia. How do THAT happen from a cold...albeit,a bad one? It isn't like you can just crawl in bed and die like I want to...nope must go take care of all the babies....

you are so talented! I am proud to

"know" you.

you know, I have never posted any of my tracking numbers, but I have sent stuff to people...some of the stuff even hatched already! I figure I don't ever really want to offer "spring eggs" anyway...I HATE owing people stuff. it is kinda bugging me right now that I do owe two swaps to people who opted to go with Barnevelders from my Blue cockerel once he is performing, but he isn't yet. c'mon boy! if I ever see him cover a hen, I will go ahead and separate out and get some eggs but he isn't even trying yet from what I could see so far. How old are they supposed to be before they are functional?

I have a question for y'all. As a rule, I have never added anything but day old chicks to my flock for biosecurity reasons. But, I have an opportunity to pick up three RB hens from the breeder I got mine from for a good price. When you do isolation how far away do you keep the newcomers from the others? How do you work isolation? When/how would you put them with my Tom?

I keep mine on the opposite end of our property with the garage wall behind them so that wind doesn't carry anything to the other chickens just in case. I try to wait 30 days.

I was pondering Madamwolf and the Partridge Barthuner crossbeak problem and GFF in general…Small gene pools and crossing birds together with the same parentage…not good. And it occurred to me that I’d be doing the same thing if I kept a couple of girls and a boy from each group of hatching eggs I am getting from swapping! (which was my original plan.) They would all be related! So I shouldn’t be breeding them back together, right? So I think now I am thinking about just keeping all the girls and finding random male chicks from someone different. With some of the GFF breeds are they all tracing their genetics back to the same source anyway so I shouldn’t bother?

Luckily in my 2 serious breeds, I already have diversity. I got my Barnevelder females from a closed group created from Lowell Barber lines…not the lines that most people in this country breed from so whoever I breed these girls to will be a complete outcross. The Dorkings I am getting from three completely different sources.

I really just want all the colors of the rainbow in chickens, so honestly breeding them is secondary and it will be limiting in a good way to not have as many boys to feed, (although I just bought the wood for the bachelor pad!) But I guess I need to go ahead and make a note from the people I am getting eggs from where their chickens came from so I can keep my eyes open for other lines. And then when I do find a different line, I can add that breed to my breeding repertoire? What do y’all think?

LOL! My DH is the biggest talker I've ever met. I've been known to walk around with earbuds on even when I'm not listening to music. Just so I can pretend not to hear him.

He's my bestest friend ever, but lordy, he can talk.

Yep, what Chatty Chad said. Also, I take care of the quarantine birds last. And I disinfect my shoes after I take care of them. I set up a shoe-wash station, it's just an old kitty litter box with a mix of lysol & water in it.
