Had a sad moment this afternoon. I had 4/11 CCLs from spoiled chicken and madam hatch. I think that I didn't put them into lockdown early enough. They were all fully formed but not totally in position. 2 boys and 5 girls never made it out. Figures that the four that hatched are all boys as well!Well at least I know for the upcoming lockdown! Those suckers are going to get 4-5 days. I accidentally put some araucanas into lockdown three days early and they ALL hatched. Fingers crossed for next time!
I am sorry. That is tough.![]()
Well my hubby came home last night. He leaves again early Sunday morning. So he figured he would be really good to me and let all the animals out and take care of the horses. But that was the problem.....he let all the ones in quarantine out too! So when I went to check on everything this afternoon I found bloody toms, bloody hens, bloody roosters, and am thinking I'm bloody mad. I know I shouldn't let him do anything on the farm because he knows squat about it. I just got the Basque, SSHs and the SFHs put away and am taking a break deciding what to do about the turkeys. I've only had the new ones about two weeks, but the nice thing about midgets is they are immune to most things other turkeys can get. Or at least that's what I've been told since I've never had a sick turkey. Anyway they have been fighting and working out their pecking order all day and things seem pretty calm right now. Well they are until hubby gets back home. I just need to explain quietly why this is a problem. Well it will be quietly until he says something like what's the big deal they're just birds.
I also just realized my tiny pacific parrotlet is helping himself to my muffin. I think I need some me time.
Oh and I had to dispatch a turkey poult today. It had a slipped tendon that just wouldn't fix. Then I must have put his cast on to tight as his foot was so swollen you couldn't tell it was a foot. It was green and purple and when I touched it it split. I have no problems killing predators, but babies just do me in every time. He never would have developed right, but those needy ones I get attached too. Look at Harvey. Nobody thought she was going to make it. Now she stays til she dies of old age. I can do any other baby easier than a poult. I love my turkeys.I am sorry.![]()
Quote: NO! Can there ever be enough CLs?![]()
Quote: My first ones have been in for a little over two weeks. Out of 12, only 3 developed. I just put 19 more in on Wednesday.

Good morning we had a bad possum problem last year we killed about five and 3 were mothers with up wards of 18 to 24 ugly nannies, glad they didn't make it. We lost over 18 chickens over 3 months all rare breeds they seemed to have a taste for the finer things in my barn.
I have nit heard fromCPL she must be busy with her birds

Will share pictures later, but we have had a goosey explossion over here. Lots of Dewlap Toulouse in Grey & Buff, Sebastopols in White, Grey (split buff), and Buff too. have 3 more eggs in lock down, 3 more waiting to move to lock down. A 1 day break and back to goose hatching again.
We had another duck explossion as well, lol Luckily many will ship out next week and we will be empty again.

I'm glad you're on the mend!
OMG...I am so impressed that you thought to use superglue! I hope it works...hugsBetta your lucky. Good guys are rare. Puglady at least he does that much. My son and I shovel because my hubby can't be bothered with things like extension cord removal. He does help with building on occasion though, and takes no crap from a rooster. He tries and that's what's important unless of course it costs a life. Then he's in deep horse poo.
So another bad thing this evening. We caught another possum attacking a chicken. I don't know if this girl will survive. Pics are graphic.
I have washed it a little and removed some shredded skin.
she seems to have goop every where.
on further inspection I've discovered where all the goo was coming from. Her crop has a small hole in it. It's big enough to put my finger in.
I super glued her crop. Dosed her in topical, can't give an injection unless she can eat which she won't be doing for a while. She's bandaged and vet wrapped. I have her resting in a dark crate in the house to keep her warm and will monitor. No food for 24 hours, but small amounts of water. Poor girl. Man I'm not liking predators lately.
Been a bad day. I'm taking a hot bath.
that's exactly how I feel!!!! I LOVE thiS!!!!
We have an electric fence for the goats, but I wonder sometimes if that's the reason we have been so lucky about predators. we put the coop inside the goat fence and the chickens freerange outside of it but can get inside quickly if they need to. We are getting out LGD soon and I am hopeful she will be a help and not a problem. she's been trained to goats but not chickens.I should count myself lucky. I've seen possums around, but haven't had one in the yard. Although something's been testing the electric fence at night.
Every once in a while, I hear a bzz-SNAP!! followed by a lot of weird squalling & thrashing. I'm thinking about setting up an infra red camera to see what's going on.
