I would not move them until they are ready to hatch. Too likely to abandon the eggs and freak out.My Sicilian Buttercup Bantams have gone broody on me. Two of the three are currently co-brooding in their elevated coop. I don't want to leave them their because of the hole in the floor. I'm afraid the chicks will fall through. Anyone have quick ideas as to a simple broody coop for a couple of bantam hens and chicks? They are sticking to the nest like glue so far, and both of them lightly peck me to express their displeasure with being disturbed. LOL
These are my first broodies and from the one breed I have that is NOT supposed to go broody. I'm sure the cause was the fact that the whole time we were at the Mayo clinic my daughters didn't collec tthe eggs. Every cage had over a dozen eggs in it which DH had to throw away. He was NOT a happy camper.
I wait until 1 chick is hatched or cheeping. Then I move them into a dog crate or crate FAST so the pipped eggs don't get shrink wrapped ( I have been know to put a feed bag under the hen and eggs and scoop the whole thing.) If there is a peeping baby under her, she will stay put where you move her if she feels safe. I cover the crate so its dark and she feels safe. I have been using these plastic crates the deliver tomatillios in from a local market for my broodies, I have 10 sitting on chicks atm, its INSANE. I had 4 in one crate that I was slipping chicks under as they hatched in the incubator . Get peeping chick, move one broodie, leave the other 3 on the 2 eggs they decided to sit on, rinse and repeat for the next week...
and yes, nest boxes full of eggs will tempt ANY chicken...
