Hubby won't take meds. because most are stimulants and he freaks over the side effects. His ADHD has caused him to loose soooooo many jobs. It's always a struggle with him. Our son is ADHD too, but managed without meds. The teachers have been awesome in helping him in that aspect. Although he still forgets to hand in his homework even when they remind him. Both are very bright, but always struggle with simple tasks. Some days I think I'm at my wits end with my hubby! He knows he has a problem, he sees the problem in our son, but refuses any treatment. Some days a rubber mallet would give me lots of peace.

The kiddos chickens really help him. He has to be organized with feeding, watering, egg collecting, selling, and cleaning. It seems to ground him in a way that other things have never did. Of course when the chickens are all in spaz mode he seems really calm and collected. He likes to do research on breeds and breeding on the Internet and has a really cool collage on the back of his bedroom door with breeds and info about them. It really helps him focus, but my hubby on the other hand gets too over whelmed by the kids chickens. I would love to get him on medication!

As for the banding....in Wisc it's anything older than 4 months. Same with testing. I just got certified to do my own testing. You should see if your ag dept offers that. It will save us a ton of money. Especially with the turkeys since they cost more and are more involved.

ADD meds aren't always all that they're cracked up to be. I liken them to zombie meds. They turn my arms and legs blue and COLD. The one teacher actually took a temp of my hands one day... 17C. Plus eating is difficult, as the mere thought of food makes you ill. It also completely cut any creativity and I felt like I couldn't think. Meds robbed me of who I was, and I was on them from 2nd grade until I turned about 14 and started flushing them down the toilet. I even wore long sleeve shirts/hoodies so I could drop the pill down the baggy sleeve when I brought the pill to my mouth... the nurse would check your mouth to be sure you weren't putting them in your cheek or something... as if you were a hard prison inmate getting checked for pouching drugs. HATED it!

Hi all! I have been cleared to read and be on the computer again :) I also tested with 20/20 vision. I feel so cool right now, lol.

On chicks swaps: I am fine to pay the difference in shipping. I have not had great luck hatching, so chicks would be a nice change. I do need to know about added expense in advance though. I think that is importand.

ADHD meds: my two children from my first marriage are on them. I am an anti med hippy at heart, so believe me when I say I did not make the decision to put them on meds lightly. My son has a form of autism. He does not respond to stimulants, but is on Stratera and an anti anxiety med that helps with his mood moderation. He is 13 now, and likes himself on meds better than off. We had to chane his schedule back in feb this year, and he forgot to take them on his new schedule for three weeks. This caused some autistic fits that we haven't seen since he started his meds. He recognized how the meds helped him and I had a sense of validation in making the right choice for him.
My daughter is pure super genius ADHD. We can't keep up with her and she can't focus long enough to really care. With her, I didn't feel it was as imperative to put her on meds. I didn't want to stifle her creativity or harm her growth. Howe Er, at 8, she was still wetting herself during the day. I found out that this is a symptom of extreme ADHD in girls. She also didn't have any friends, which was hard because she is very social. I broke down and sought medication for her. She is now on Concerta. Within a month of staring it her day wetting issues were resolved. Her social issues are getting better as well. She is nine now and has been on the meds for a year. As much as I wanted to be on the "ADHD is over diagnosed in our society and we are causing harm to our children," bandwagon, I need to say and know that these meds truly are I. The best interest of my children.
I also had a lesson I. The legalized meth argument recently: there are levels that you consume a drug in. Most stimulants, with caffein being the exception, have two levels: a focus level, and then an intoxicated level. The focus level is not addictive, and you don't experience withdrawals. This is why many parents can take their kids off of their med on weekends and holidays with no ill effect. These are my layman mom's understanding. My mother and sister were both diagnosed as adults and love there life much better with meds. They are able to focus at their jobs much better. I also have been diagnosed, but I function well without meds (same job for 8 years). With all the adult diagnosis of ADHD, I am under the impression that it is not over diagnosed in children now, but was under diagnosed I. Previous years. Obviously, we can manage without meds, but if it true,y is the difference between keeping a job or not...

I am thinking out loud about a topic that has occupied much of my time and thoughts for the past thirteen years. Ymmv

I had friends growing up that had similar experiences to yours. I had specialists tell me that my son needed to be on meds starting at age three. I resisted until he was 10. I check with my kids daily and they are, so far, happier on than off. I intend to let that be their choice though.

My daughter has severe ADHD and ODD. She is on meds for both but still has alot of problems. She can't have chocolate or sodas or anything with red dye in it. She is your typical 11 year old.
She does snick and get this things even thought she knows she can't have them. They make her talk hateful and it counter acts her meds. So it is like she has not taken meds in a week. She can get where you can't control her. Her behavior is awful. You almost have to put her in lockdown in the house to keep her from getting into trouble. The main problem with the chocolate and sodas is she gets them at school from her friends and when they have a party for the class. We have our hands full with her and our 9 year old special needs son. I feel for you. I know how ADHD can effect a person. My family is not around my children much and don't see the problem. They think there is nothing wrong with her.

Stimulant medications for ADHD absolutely should not make you a Zombie. Often, giving the meds is another form of diagnostics. The meds, when given to kids with ADHD, usually make an immediate and marked difference in their behavior. When given to kids without ADHD, they will cause the Zombie effect. My conclusion as a practioner would be that you did not have ADHD, you had early childhood symptoms of Bi-Polar. Though early symptoms and expression of Bi-Polar will very often mimic these symtoms and are often confused. Giving untreated people with Bi-Polar Disorder ADHD medications is very, very dangerous and causes these kinds of issues. When someone with Bi-Polar is properly treated for those symptoms first, you can add stimulants very carefully. Bi-Polar Disorder is the most misunderstood disorder we have and is often masked as other things. Addionally, I strongly believe that children should be given an absolute choice when it comes to psychiatric medication. They know and can make these descisions with guidance. I think it verges on abusive to force a child to take these kinds of medicine and I am sorry this happened to you and so many other children.

Is it the High Fructose Corn Syrup? That does the same thing to me. If so, I make my own all natural, no HFC soda syrup I can send for you. It is most made of the actual boiled root or herbs. It even have very little white sugar and is really good. Just ask Pugs boys. Taste just like Coke or Root Beer.

Unfortunately, getting diagnosed with BP wasn't much better. I explained that I always got in trouble between January and April. They looked through my records and confirmed that and dosed me with prozac and adderal. The first three days were GOLD. Then after that, all I did was sleep. I was in an alternative school part time at that point and regular highschool for half of the day. I did well there, as they gave you a year's worth of work at a time and said "if you have questions, ask" then set you in a booth alone. I did awesome until they played with meds. They kicked me out of that school after sleeping for a week straight. Then they finally Dx me with BP. THEN, I HATED my dad's girlfriend. I always had, but dad blamed everything on the bipolar and so they kept changing meds around like I was a yoyo. I finally said the hell with that and haven't taken another clinical med since. I do take St John's wort when I need to, but can't take too much or it sends me off the other end. Anyone who says St John's wort doesn't work (ie drug companies) is full of snot.

OMG!!!! What is wrong with people anyway!!!! So, they give you prozac and adderal? That is going to cause someone with Bi-Polar to lose their @@@@ mind! I wish that doctors would stop and think. Giving someone with inherent mood instability a stimulant and antidepressant without a mood stabilizer is stupid and dangerous. This is a huge part of the problem with all of these types of disorders and medications. They can be dangerous, they can screw people up and they can change lives. Willy nilly medicating with psychotropics is frightening. It reminds me of every time I have surgery and anesthesia I have to convince them and argue with them over and over that taking a methamphedimate and Anesthesia is a very bad idea. The hospital through a fit last time I refused. I apologize on behalf of our whole screwed up system.

Well, they originally thought I was ADD with seasonal depression. Then when I crashed off the deep end after a few days, they said "well, you have bi-polar, that's usually how we diagnose it". But, it took a very long time to climb back down from that particular spike. They tell you that you won't see results for two weeks at the soonest, so keep taking it unless you get suicidal. So, if after three days, I went off the deep end, imagine two full weeks of that dosing without anything to bring it back down. It wasn't a fun time in my life to put it nicely.
