I so need to build a hatcher but I am handy in no way! Anyone got plans for a easy way to build a hatcher out of one of those foam coolers? I can get my hands on those at all times for free but I don't know anything about building one.

Welcome to the club! I have 4 large styrofoam coolers and no clue where to begin...lol

Last year when I built mine I had no clue where to start. I watched this guys videos and was amazed at how simple it was to build, especially for this not so mechanically inclined lady. My suggestion is to not go with the hot water heater thermostat. Spend the extra $ and buy either the wafer thermostat or the bi-metal one. I bought mine on ebay. I also drilled a hole on the side of each one of the bators and ran aquarium tubing into a pan inside so that I can fill a syringe and add water without having to open the bator at all. I have actually built 3 of these bators and they have been running almost non stop since last July. They hold temp and humidity perfectly.

Good morning Hollow Oak Farm and everybody! I'm still up, actually, trying to get the barn mucked out, a portable coop finished, and some of the birds shuffled to where they need to be. Man, I don't do all-nighters as easily as I did when I was younger! The tack room's all scrubbed down and cleaned out (after telling me I could use it, the landlord decided said use did not include brooding chicks in there...), organizing the main barn can wait till after I've slept, but I have got to get the coop done and the three-stack cage cleaned and set back up and birds into them and everyone fed and watered before I can crash. I can't wait!!!

On the upside, it was a lovely moonlit night which made it easy to drag stuff around the pasture, and the sunrise here in central Ohio is very pretty today :)

G'morning peeps!!!! I've decided to hatch some of my white bresse/NN OE eggs just to see what they look like. Let me tell you, those White Bresse are laying machines. I've gotten 2-3 eggs a day consistently from hens. Put eggs into lockdown this morning: bantam orps for wvstruttin and 1 black barth egg.

I have a question. How do you darken an egg yolk? One of my black barths lays a pale yellow yolk which I'm assuming is part of the reason I'm having incubation problems with her eggs.

Quote: Congrats!!! White female there

Quote: Hatchers are for the final three days when eggs are in lockdown and no longer turned, they arenot for incubating.

Pale yolks are diet related, dark greens will help if given regularly, dandelions help too. Is she being forced to eat last and missing the good stuff? If not then she could be not absorbing everything properly.

I would guess maybe if they don't have access to grass to pick them some grass a couple of times a week and give it to them. I also forment my chickens food and it works great. I throw a little bit of minced garlic in there everytime I make it too to help with any kind of mites and to keep them healthy. My chickens don't all have grass in there runs anymore so I just pick it for them.

I need to get my fodder system going so I can start giving them all greens. They get grass when it is cut and clover until the garden is tilled up.

I was actually thinking about this earlier this morning. Does it affect the taste of the eggs at all?

Nope, and I haven't seen a mite at all. I was having a problem with them once it started warming back up and I hadn't had a problem with them in a while. But we have had so many birds coming through here lately that I saw some on my birds a couple months back. So since I started doing this I don't see any on them. I also put it in my dogs and cats water to keep the fleas away.

I love garlic too though so if it flavored the eggs I would probably love it.
