Yeh we let 6 hens go this weekend out of my egg layers because we are growing out so many Silver Penciled Rocks, Rhodebars, Lemon Cuckoo's, Lavenders, Swedish Flowers(about 25-30) and then the 80 GFF chicks and more coming I had to sell something. It will cut into egg sales temporarily, I guess we will have to eat less eggs as to not make no customers upset. We are using 7 bags a week on layer, and 10 a week on chick oh yeh and one turkey every 2 -3 weeks.

we are similar on the feed.... way too expensive for me. I guess I will be able to start offsetting the costs now that some are laying.... but still

does your area suffer from mud slides if too much rain in the spring?

Fortunately for us, we don't get mudslides. I lived in CA for a year and mudslides are scary! There is one settlement in a canyon south that had a mountain slide down on it, but that is pretty rare.

Woooaaahhhh! Holy crap girl! It's hard selling around here. Everyone wants production breeds for dirt cheap. Silkies, marans and blue egg layers seem to do okay though, even if they're just roos! Selling eggs? There's no stinking way. It costs me about $2.40 to produce a dozen eggs... People will NOT pay $3 or even $2.50. I had ONE customer who was willing to pay $2. The rest want free-range eggs at grocery prices. IE, $1.50/dozen. Even last year, free-range, fermented grain, soy and corn free eggs were a max of $2/doz.

I am selling eggs, not often as I don't have that many layers, for $5 a dozen. One of my customers was buying them for $8 a dozen and was not happy with the quality. She cleaned me out last week by buying four dozen at once. I give more away than I sell though

I have raspberries in, have to plant my seedless concord vines and apple trees. I am thinking about just getting wild blackberry starts. The blueberries, I want to wait for them to go on clearance too. I just cannot afford $15 for a bush. $20 was steep enough for me for the trees!
Well good trees I spend money for. I'm partial to Starks and have lays gotten healthy stock. That being said as I'm a known long term customer I get special deals. Thats when I buy. The most I've ever paid for blueberry bushes is $10/each though. Trees however I'm willing to pay more for. I plan to landscape around our house completely with fruits and nuts. It should be really yummy! Of course I may have to chase off the turkeys some. I'm willing to share, but not all. Last year the little stinkers jumped up and stole every single peach from the smallest tree. This year I'm fencing. Take that naughty turkeys. Well ok their cute so ill toss them some.
Wow, I wish we had something like that here! That is super ultra cool.
Check with your local agriculture extension office. They should have a list of CSAs
Check farmer's markets, any kind of farm store, local goods stores, etc. Even feed mills might have some CSA advertising.
Those are good too! Also check the state organic certification web sight. Most do the organic stuff.
The rain we have had here the last 48 hours has been amazing. The river that borders two sides of our land is the highest I've seen it in the 7 years since we bought the property. Probably about 8 feet based on the normal height of the bridge I'm standing on in the second picture...
We got flooded out in 2008. We got the basement pumped out, cleaned and treated to prevent mold. Woke up the next morning to raw sewage three feet deep in our basement. Turns out the builder didn't install a flow check valve as required by law. Nothing we could do though except clean it up again. We got everything fixed and remodeled. Then we found our farm, sold our home and built our house on a hill. We have a non navicable waterway running through our property. I wanted our house up high.

My oldest son was born at the university of Utah hospital. That was sept of 82. While I was in the hospital it rained so bad I watched a jeep float out of the parking garage. The next spring they had terrible flooding. One whole neighborhood was devastated by a slide. Can't remember the name of it but it was really a bad year for them. By then I had moved though.

I have ANOTHER genetics question.... What would you get if you put this beautiful Mahogany Jubilee orp roo in with BBS hens? Would it be worth it? My Jubilees are still to young to stick this guy in there with them.

I was just talking about that with my DH. I was four/five when the Flood happened. I vaguely remember going to see the flood on State Street with my parents. I didn't understand why it was a big deal, I just remember my dad moving sand bags and I kept wondering why they needed to do that to a river. DH is ten years older than me so he remembers it a lot better than I do.

Not 100% but they would make splits sort of. They would carry the genes but they would not express the first cross. Breed those babies back to a Jubilee and you will get a few with the spots. You would have to breed the color BACK like it should be. 3 generations and you might have something to work with..... Blue Jubilees.... hum. I would think you would get takers on the eggs.
