I have a question for all you part time free rangers. I want to start free ranging my white bresse when I am home. Would it be better to start them off in a small area and let them get use to that before letting them out into the larger area? I want to make sure they go back to the coop at night. I'm talking about maybe .5 acres. Not a ton of space but I am only talking about 5 birds.

That brahma looks to have some points in the hackles. How old are they?

When we start a new group free ranging they get a limited space the first few days so they understand the coop/run is home base/safety/where to lay/return in a threat is over head. Then they can have a larger space.

Well, I am thinking I like the size the midgets become (Thanks Sah) I love turkey, I could eat it all year long. I am really loving my geese (Thanks COF) and I love my ducks. I have already decided a few of my breeds will be going after I fulfil the swaps owed on them, so i will be able to be a little more diverse. Thanks to all the enablers out there. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

I can't hatch turkeys either, but I know someone who can.

And hopefully when I have my own, I shall be able to figure out how to hatch them
What breeds are you getting rid of?

I don't see why they wouldn't go in at night, if their coop is accessible to the run....

If I remember right there is 2 age groups of brahmas in here. One group is about 1 week behind the other. This one is 12-13 weeks old.

When ever I free range birds for the first time, they rarely travel far from their coop. I don't restrict the free rangers and they hardly travel from the back yard. Granted we have a natural fence with the woods, but they could go out front...
