Not to disrupt the current flow of conversation, but what's the laying season for those Midget Whites? Too late to get eggs or poults for this year? Preferably poults

Whoops!!! Change of plans for clucky today! Just opened the incubator to candle the marans eggs I have set for fertility test and I heard cheeps! I have oh, I don't know, a hundred eggs due to hatch Wednesday I thought... Be back after locking down lots of eggs! This'll take a bit -- I need to make dividers and stuff or I'll never be able to tell who's who.

for a decent hatch this time!

Just to add to the discussion some people said they would offer PayPal if they were not able to fulfill spring orders. I'd expect some of them at least to still offer this.

Cj I feel you in people offering eggs for now if they owe them.

I do understand selling some eggs between swaps but I personally would not be comfortable with it.

I will say other than the person who shall not be named (not Voldemort) any spring eggs that I have not received are due purely to my request. If these never get shipped, that is again totally my fault and decision for not being able to take them when offered by the other swappers.

On the other side of spring eggs, when I offered the Houdans I had no idea that they would be nearly a year old before laying reliably. I am not getting enough to start shipping eggs but haven't checked fertility. I sent a couple to cjwaldon with her shipment of Blues this last weekend asking her to check them for me to see how they fare shipped.

I have 4 that were laid Saturday and Sunday if anyone I owe them to would like them against their swaps owed. If they develop then a swap will be cleared, if not it will not count. PM me if you want me to start sending them this week. They are laying reliably now as long as my egg breaker doesn't get to the nest first. LOL I have a light Brahma that has to come out of that pen because she is so big and clumsy that she accidentally breaks eggs that are in the nest she uses.

As for the time limit it is a good idea. I remember people having dry spells last summer.

I also think people should be able to ask for shipping in a week or 2 but people should be able to say no. That keeps the swap moving. Right now I think people say yes even if they would rather say no to be polite. Making no acceptable might solve the problem.

I would say your humidity during incubating is way too high. You are drowning them during lockdown. My humidity is 15 - 20% during incubation. 60-65% during lockdown.

x3. I keep my humidity in the low 30's during incubation and then 60-70% (depending on the bird) during lockdown.

They are beginning to wind down a bit right now. We are down to eight eggs a day currently. Depending on who's still laying if they go below say six eggs a day with mostly same genetics laying I will get concerned about too much inbreeding. This happened when the UW had possession of them and some individual breeders that took the stock in have did much work to correct the problem. Others not so much. Too much inbreeding leads to severely reduced fertility very quickly in this breed. Happens in all breeds, but because it did happen and I'm lucky enough to have them I get a little protective. If I know people will be keeping for breeding and not just eating or selling them I want to ensure they get a wide range of genetics. Im working on securing another set of genetics and have a lead on one more. yes i know whos who and who mated who and who laid which egg. These are like children to me and yes I'm weird, but hey I'm momma!

As for shipping poults I'm really nervous about it. I would need some major input. Newly hatched poults should not get wet. A wet poult is a dead poult. Wish I could set up a turkey train. Send me a PM and we can see what we can work out.

and here's one of her brothers. See the difference in the snood. I'll get the head angles later so you can see the rounded for boys and triangle for girls.

ummm....I thought CL's were autosexing?
I want to put this out there for discussion. Please be considerate and polite when responding.

What do you think about limiting the time eggs can be offered? None of us can tell the future and what's going to happen. Offering eggs for Fall is really pushing it. Heck, mid to late summer is pushing it too. So I want to get everyone's opinion since this is everyone's swap here.

So my opinion is maybe a limit of 2 months. If you can't get the swap out in the 2 month limit then it shouldn't be offered. With some new breeds popping up, most of us don't even know when they will start laying. I mean, how long does it take a Barthuhner to mature and start laying?

I'm not trying to chase anyone off. Just trying to keep it under control a bit. I mean, there are some swappers who may not get all their swaps out before Spring is up.

So what is your opinion?
It is probably a good idea...
