Question for everyone - I know it is recommended to wait 3 weeks after separating to be sure you are getting pure eggs. What if they don't lay much during the 3 week period? Do I need to extend that time frame?

great question!!! I know there is an egg string, so if they aren't laying = my guess is that it would take the egg string that much longer to cycle. Love to know if theory holds true.

I would think the 3 weeks would still hold true, as it refers to the viability period for the sperm. The egg is not fertilized until it is preparing to be laid, I do believe, otherwise the internal temperature of the hen would cause it to start to develop.

Yeah I could just do it the old fashioned way for sure. We would need to pick a charity, have someone offer up the prize (assuming they will be compensated out of the pot), and go from there...does anyone object to doing this on this thread? Are people interested in doing something like this?

Nobody wants my eggs...

All right... I just got back into poultry from a 5 year break while I went to college. When I left, it was impossible to keep up with the demand for Buff Orps and Dominiques. Now, not so much. I can sell all the hens and pullets I want to here in the area and they go like hotcakes, but nobody wants hatching eggs or roos.

Serious question... This is the part where I find new chickens to focus on... Any suggestions?

I have some pure Greenfire lines Coronation Sussex chicks and SQ Silkie chicks from Catdance lines and from CJ Silkies in the brooder. I also have some bantam cochins that are growing out. I just sold all my adult ducks. I no longer have any project campbell/rouen crosses, and also sold all the ducklings that I didn't want to keep. Out of around 40 ducklings that I hatched, I kept 8 pure campbells (3 white, 4 dark, and 2 khaki). So, I hope to have some eggs from them in the spring. The Pilgrim geese aren't laying since it is fall and I already have a waiting list on goslings once they do start laying in the spring... I have some SQ Buff Orpington chicks and hatching eggs from Greenfire Lemon Cuckoo Orps, Greenfire Light Sussex, Hink-jc Lavender Orps, and more Greenfire/Presley Coros coming in the spring, but that's going to put any eggs from them into next fall... Any other ideas?

I just pm'd one of the moderators to make sure, but I did a search for "raffle" and got a few things so I think it might actually be ok...we'll see! One of the raffles I found from earlier this year had over 300 BYC people participate!
