Seramas " big chickens in a little body" . We keep our Serama in the garage, well we did, now after our "run in" with the health department they will be moving to the "pool room" tomorrow. Indiana health code does not allow chickens in the house or to share the same ventilation system as your home. Since one of our 2 heating systems is in the garage the Sermas have to move. The garage stays around 50 even in the Winter and this was fine for the Seramas. The room they are moving to is a cinder block addition near our swimming pool with no heating. We are going to put in a milk house heater hopefully keeping it around 50 for them all Winter. The Summer hi temps were no problem for them even at 100+.

I only have 2 Winters of Serama keeping in cold climate, since we have only been gone from California 2 years. Michelle (reesepoultry) has more experience in this department than myself.

If you want to know about Indiana health code and chickens in your house, I'm your gal, lol. we have no chickens in the house!! We never did despite what the neighbors said. Now macaws and cuckatoo's, now that's a different story.

I also have serama, smooth, frizzle & silkied.  I treat mine the same as any other chicken, bear in mind I live in N CA.  They teach themselves quickly to go to coop at night, I had 3 hens go broody together, you never knew who was sitting on the eggs and they all fought over the chicks when they hatched.  When you walk into their run, they just stand and let you pick them up.  Very sweet little things.

The drawbacks............I find them difficult to hatch shipped eggs, the rates are quite low, but high for incubating your own eggs.

And dang, this season i raised nearly 20, got 3 pullets, yikes!

I do have one little smooth cockerel with a permanent home..  I had eggs that were nearly 3 days past in the incubator, I pulled them out and set them aside.  A day and a half later, I was putting the bad eggs in a trash sack and thought I heard a very faint sound.  I pulled each egg out of the trash and held it to my ear until I found the one making a sound.  I chipped the cold egg open and there was a little serama chick.  Of course it was a cockerel, but his name is Miracle and he can stay, he is a tiny little thing and obviously has a strong will to live.

I normally open my non-hatching eggs, but was so tired of finding unhatched fuly formed chicks, I hadn't that one time.  I have gone back to always looking.

This just happened to me today. I had an egg 3 days past the rest of 100% hatch so I pulled it from the incubator and hours later when I went to throw it away I was shocked to see it pipped. So I opened it I thought for sure it was dead and set it down while I got a bag to put it in and it's little mouth opened. I set it in the bator for a few hours and now it's up and cheaping in the brooder. Little squirt. It's a Silkied Serama which are so hard to hatch and why I didn't even think to check it when I took it from the bator so late. I won't make that mistake again.

So I opened it I thought for sure it was dead and set it down while I got a bag to put it in and it's little mouth opened. I set it in the bator for a few hours and now it's up and cheaping in the brooder. Little squirt. It's a Silkied Serama which are so hard to hatch and why I didn't even think to check it when I took it from the bator so late. I won't make that mistake again.

I have one of madamwlf's cream legbar eggs that was due to hatch on Thursday. My other one hatched on Wednesday night. It still has veins but it has not pipped yet. How long do I need to wait before I try to help it?

Maybe me going on vacation for a few days is a good thing... I left a few in the bator that I should have pulled. I might have some late bloomers! My family will check for me tomorrow.

With all the appts for the kids and halloween parties I had forgotten to turn off the turner on the 30th for lock down. On the 2nd I came home and heard peeping form the bator to find a chick hanging on. It was very lucky it didn't get crushed from the turner. Thats happened several times with quail but they're so tiny they haven't ever gotten crushed. I've actually had to rescue them from under the screen thats between the turner and bottom of the base of the bator. There isn't any gaps for them to get under there but they manage it somehow.

I have a couple more large boxes to get out so I can't swap too much. I have to watch how many eggs I let go. My buyer did a HUGE favor for me and I want her to have lots of eggs in return.
